Without the activities planned out for me and with my math teaching coming from the public school system, my mind doesn't comprehend the Singapore way very well and I have a hard time teaching it on my own. I LOVE Carrie's activities and have loved SM using those. I'm trying to figure out how to teach it without having to pay $40 to get the HIG's....I know it's great and easy to teach, but teaching 3A to a young 3rd grader without hands-on doesn't work in my mind or hers. I also need to work on add/subt facts with her...she does NOT have these down at all. She is in need of more review (I gave her some add and subt problems with borrowing and carrying and she couldn't remember how to do it. She also could not subt. simple problems like 15-8...she did the ones (5-8) and her answer was 0...the tens (1-0) was 1...so 15-8=10.

We just started back to school and I'm just bummed by her lack of retention and her growing dislike for math. I have one other mental math/conceptual based math program in mind, but want some help from you all first! It's not as complete as SM, but has a similar philosophy, scripted lessons with hands-on in the 3rd level which is what we need now. I'm thinking of giving her the Singapore Placement test for the levels she is finishing (2A and 2B) to see if she passes. If she does, we'll keep truckin' in SM. If not, I'm more apt to think my dd is one of few SM isn't working for. She has some "issues" and needs repetition and a semi-spiral type program.
Sorry for venting and thinking out loud...my posts get long when I do that as I'm sure you've noticed! It's the panic!
