I have just started getting some of the additional emergent reader books at the library. He reads them during his quiet time and enjoys them. It would be great if I could buy all the ones we like, so I keep looking at the Goodwill bookstore.
He just read "Dust for Dinner" in less than 1/2 hour to Dad the other day.
We started doing the regular Emergent list with the Early Readers Bible 2 1/2 months ago, 1 chapter at a time. He reads to us at night, answers the questions and reads it by himself in the morning. He was so excited when he finished his first bible and could do "The Beginners Bible".
We do follow the schedule now, but he still does his bible reading as devotional time. When he is finished we'll keep getting him more difficult children's bibles till he can read a regular bible for devotions.
Once he is done with the emergent reader bibles, I will turn the book reading into his school reading time, keeping his devotions separate.
I just told him that his devotions are not considered school, they are for life! He loves it and is very proud to read and pray on his own.
