Optional Emerging Reader books for Beyond...

Post by LeAnna » Thu Apr 02, 2009 10:43 am

Just curious if anyone is using the optional supplemental emerging reader books for Beyond and how they are incorporating them into their school day. I was thinking about getting some of them, since I have two kids who will be doing Beyond.... who also love to read! I thought it would give them something extra to read when we aren't really doing "school". :D

We are doing the Emerging Readers from the Beyond and it is part of our school day. My kids take turns spending couch time with me doing their reading, while the other is working at the table on their handwriting, or phonics book pages (ETC), etc... so while my little one is still doing RME, my oldest is working thru the emerging reader set and comprehension questions. We are currently on The Christian Liberty Nature Guide. Not exactly my son's favorite (although I am really enjoying learning all about some of God's creatures!!!) My son tends to like fiction readers better. This is the first book in the set that he hasn't wanted to finish in one day...all the other's he has completed much quicker than the "schedule" allows. He is looking forward to reading Tornado as soon as the Nature Guide is complete~!

Once we finish this we are going right into DITHOR...which should be at the first of next school year!

Hi Tiffanie,

Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry if my question wasn't very clear. I plan to do the emerging reader set, just am wondering about the "Optional" emerging reader books that you can either buy somewhere else or get from the library. :D They are listed in the back of Beyond. Anyone using these?

With my first child we did the primary reading and questions during schooltime. Then when we read before bedtime I would have him read part of the optional book to me. Or sometimes he would bring them in the car and read them to his sister.

My second is almost ready to start the emerging reader series...

LeAnna,

We did them too! Each week I just placed the new book for the unit in my son's empty laundry basket under his bed to read on his own during his quiet time in his room in the afternoons. I also added any Emerging Reader books that he'd already completed for "school" to his basket under his bed as well. By the end of the year, he had quite a collection in his basket to read during quiet time! 8)

Each of my kiddos has an empty laundry basket under his bed for any special books (that are extras outside of school-time reading) that I set aside for my boys to read during quiet time. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Thanks Carrie! That was kind of what I was thinking too. For bedtime, or what have you, I thought the supplemental would be great, because they would match up perfectly to where the girls were at in their Emerging Readers. :D I am a book junkie at heart too, so I thought it would be nice for them to have a collection of those books. :D

I have just started getting some of the additional emergent reader books at the library. He reads them during his quiet time and enjoys them. It would be great if I could buy all the ones we like, so I keep looking at the Goodwill bookstore.
He just read "Dust for Dinner" in less than 1/2 hour to Dad the other day.
We started doing the regular Emergent list with the Early Readers Bible 2 1/2 months ago, 1 chapter at a time. He reads to us at night, answers the questions and reads it by himself in the morning. He was so excited when he finished his first bible and could do "The Beginners Bible".
We do follow the schedule now, but he still does his bible reading as devotional time. When he is finished we'll keep getting him more difficult children's bibles till he can read a regular bible for devotions.
Once he is done with the emergent reader bibles, I will turn the book reading into his school reading time, keeping his devotions separate.
I just told him that his devotions are not considered school, they are for life! He loves it and is very proud to read and pray on his own.
