Mary,

We're reading it now as our adventure...and are really enjoying it! :D I don't think it would fall into the historical fiction category becuase it really happened. From the intro..."What you're about to read is factual and accurate. All dates, times, and places are real. The people who took part in it are also real." More from the into..."Most of our country's history comes to us on printed pages. But there was a time before those pages were written, when people actually experienced the adventures we read about. To make past events truly come to life, the people involved must also come to life. We must really know how they felt and what they may have thought. To do this, the author has tried to 'recreate' various speeches and thoughts for his characters. All of these inventive touches have been done with great care, in order to keep them true to the characters and true to their times." He used the diary of Henry Knox, correspondence between Knox and General Washington, newspaper articles later in the 1800's from those on the trek...

HTH! :D
BTW, I think your boys would like this book. Grant and I sure are enjoying it.

Pooh! I was getting excited! Ok, I am going to start a new thread that people can share their favorite books for the different Genre's.

While I have your ear Kathleen. I am so impressed that you get up and run every morning. I am striving so hard to add exercise into my day.

Your thread sounds like a great idea! We're using Guns for General Washington now because we'd already read Snow Treasure last year which was reccommended in our "pack". I LOVE Snow Treasure!! (My college professor read it to us in our "Teaching Reading" class in college, and I'd been wiating to have kids old enough to read it to. All of us college kids loved "kids" read-alouds, too. El Ed classes are a lot of fun!) Hey, maybe you could use that as Historical Fiction instead of Adventure. They know that the gold made it from Norway to the US...but there's no proof that it actually happened. (I haven't actually done the Historical Fiction genre yet in storytime or DITHOR though, so maybe I shouldn't be throwing out advice yet. )

Mary, I love to run! It keeps me sane some days. I love to have the quiet time to think and pray. In college I started using my running time to think only of things that I'm thankful for. I still do this often. It does wonders for my outlook on the day when I take 30 min just to reflect on all I can thank God for! I live in the middle of nowhere, so I don't usually meet any vehicles on the dirt road I run on...but if it rains, I can't get out for a few days. This winter when it doesn't get light early enough to go early I may have to tweak my schedule...recess late morning? We'll see how it's going.

If you get into a walking routine, I bet you'll have more energy. (It works for me anyway.) Maybe you can have a "Thankfulness Walk"?
