It's my understanding that 'who' does the action and 'whom' receives it. Like, "She gave the flowers to Sally." WHO gave the flowers? TO WHOM were the flowers given?
Give some examples on sentences using the words that confuse you, if you want, and we can help you reason through them so we all get it. It throws me too. Lol.

This is our first year doing formal english. We are in r&s 3. I am thrilled that my son "gets it", because frankly many of these concepts are not easy for me. I never...I repeat...never had English instruction in all of my years of public schooling. I remember only once in 3rd grade learning about nouns. The first and only time I saw a diagram was when I took Spanish in High School. So, so sad...but, I am so glad my children will get the education I never received!!

With that...I would have to ask my son about your question...lol!!!

Both are interrogative pronouns - hence, the confusion.

However, WHO is in the nominative case. It can only be used as the subject of a sentence.

WHOM is in the objective case. It may be used as a direct object.

"When you are not sure whether to use who or whom in a sentence, it is helpful to substitute he for who, and him for whom."

Example from Rod and Staff...

You saw (who or whom?)
Think: You saw him.
Say: You saw whom.

(Who or whom) is coming?
Think: He is coming.
Say: Who is coming.

I can add more. Does this help?

LOL Florence!

I don't know what objective/nominative case means.

Ahhhhh....nope. Still don't get it. I think I'm in trouble.

The nominative case is the subject of the sentence. The subject is the noun that does the verb.
Example: The dog bit the man.
Dog is the subject and is in the nominative case.

The objective case is the object of the sentence. The object has things done to it. Like the man in the above example. He didn't do anything; the dog bit him.

So, for whom, you could say, "Whom did the dog bite?" "He bit Jerry."

I think this is so hard because nobody ever uses this, except maybe in formal writing. It probably sounds totally foreign even when somebody is using it correctly, because we rarely ever hear it.

Oh, good point! You're not in trouble, but understanding objective/nominative will help immensely!

Do you have it yet from the previous poster?

I might add that my examples were taken from Rod and Staff 5. Hang in there!

Oh Whew! We're only on R&S 3. I think I'll just print this thread and fold it nicely in that area of my text.

I definitely use the TM! Though I feel I have a great command of the English language, write well, spell well, and know when to use who, whom, etc. I am NOT good at explaining the why of it. So, the TM helps a LOT. I think the pp's explained it very well. :o

I love R&S! For the first time this year I feel like I finally got the who, whom thing. I think I am going to learn a lot over the years! :D
