Hi!
My ds is 11 and reads at grade level, but is still having a lot of problems with spelling. I did not hs him 1st and 2nd grade, so I'm not sure what his phonics instruction was at that time. I'm beginning to think that he needs phonics instruction to help him with his spelling and to further help him sound out long words that he's not seen before. We have been doing the dictation, and I added Sequential Spelling, but I still think it might be a phonics issue.
Also, there is the possibility that after next year I may not be hsing him so I would need to be able to get through this phonics instruction in the next year.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks so much in advance!
Michelle

Ive used, and seen Carrie mention, Phonics Pathways. Pick up where you need to and can also be used as spelling program through phonics which the author explains in the book. It's no frills and very complete. Not childish at all.

Hi Michelle!
Here are a few threads where Carrie has some helpful suggestions for this...

I used "The Reading Reflex" when tutoring older dc in reading, as well as within a classroom setting, and found that to be a more mature looking approach to teaching phonics in a thorough way. I used to have parent helpers in the classroom rotate through helping dc that needed extra help in reading, and they were able to easily pick up "The Reading Reflex" and use it, so it is not difficult to use. HTH!
