Brand new- where would you put a 12 year old?

Post by acamac01 » Wed Apr 13, 2011 7:31 am

I am new to HOD. :-) I am getting ready to start LHTH with my 2 & 4 year olds and will start LHFHG when my 4 year old turns 5.

I have been praying about possibly moving my 12 year old from PS to homeschooling starting next year. He loves the school he goes to, but the school is quite a distance and we just cannot afford the gas even with carpooling anymore. We have been looking for other options and are now considering homeschooling him.
Unfortunately we may not even be able to do that. His dad isn't really for it and he has joint legal custody, so he would have to agree. Plus, finances are also an issue. Like I said, I've been praying and waiting on God about what to do for next school year. I'm pretty curious though about where I should place him in HOD if, God willing, we are able to use it with him.

He is currently in 6th grade, a very strong reader, smart, but not very inclined to work if he doesn't have to. (Laziness is a challenge for him) My thoughts were to maybe start in CTC with the extensions to give him a feel for HOD. I have no idea where he would place in Rod and staff or singapore math.
I looked at the placement chart and age wise he could start with one of the RtR's but coming from ps all of his life, is that a good idea? Would CTC be too easy for him?
I'm quite lost on where to place him and I know this question probably comes up a lot, but could anyone offer advice?

How exciting you are going to have your 12 yo home to homeschool! :D I think CTC sounds like a good placement for him, and I'd start with R & S English 5 as he'll be 7th grader. It may be hard at first, but it's only 2 days a week, and he'll grow into it. :D You can give the free Singapore Math Placement test at this link...

I think you'll enjoy CTC - it is a wonderful journey through the ancients! :D Here's a link to the CTC Photobook so you can see what your ds will get to do...
