Carrie: re Who Is God in Rev2Rev

Post by OneFunSon » Thu Mar 24, 2011 10:26 pm

Hi Carrie,

We are planning on using Rev2Rev this year. I think the material in Who Is God may be redundant for my son. He will be 13 in Nov and we have discussed this type of material for several years now. I will be able to borrow Who Is God from a friend and look it over to be sure, but if it is too redundant I wouldn’t want to spend a whole year on it, but may have him just read through it this summer for review.

I am thinking of substituting the next book, Who Am I, for Who is God. Before I did this I wanted to know if you plan on using the rest of the series in the upcoming guides. I know the books are recommended through 14 years so maybe you would not use all of them? If you are planning on using the upcoming books I would need to find something else; do you have any other suggestions for substitutions?

I know the 3rd and 4th books in the series aren’t even written yet and that plans aren’t set in stone this far ahead, but thought I would ask.

Thanks for providing such a great curriculum!
Karen

Hi Karen,

Welcome to HOD!
I just got our Rev.2 Rev. today, and the "Who is God?" book looks wonderful. I hope the other books are used in the future, too!
Love in Christ,

Someone asked the question about the Who is God series a little while back. Here is the thread that includes Carrie's response: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8552 I don't know if that is going to answer your question. I think if you really want to move onto the next I would and then if it is used later you could substitute something else then. :D

Thank you Ladies!

I guess I will just have to wait until my friend finishes the book so I can look through it; then I will have a better idea what to do.

Karen, I'm new on this board but I saw your post and wanted you to know that I received this book recently and love it! I did a review on it as well. Here's the link http://ourhomeschoolreviews.blogspot.co ... eview.html

My daughter is just 7 now but I can see her getting so much more out of it when she is older.

Thank you Christine! I had read some of the reviews by some of your crew mates and a couple of them mentioned that they thought the book was a little young for their older dc who were my ds's age. So that got me wondering, especially since we have covered these types of issues. But maybe Who Is God will cover them in a different way than I have, and it's always good for dc to hear things from someone else besides Mom.
By the way, love your "scrappy" looking blog!

You're welcome. I read some of the other reviews so I know what you are saying. I can only speak for us though. :) It is nice that you can borrow it before buying it. And thanks for the blog compliment.

I reviewed this product as well and I have to say my 14 year old loved it. We have also covered a lot of this but Koty thought it was really well done and chose to stop after the review period was up when I told him he would be doing it in the fall. I truly believe if it wasn't already going to be scheduled for him, he would have continued on his own. Great, huh!

Karen,

The ladies have already done such a great job of answering your questions and of pointing you toward what I shared earlier about the possibilities of HOD using more in this series. :D I will share that in going through the first book in this series my husband and I at first thought that most of it was material we'd already covered with our kiddos, as it gives the impression that it isn't so deep (in its font size and stories especially). However, I will say that there is much more there than meets the eye, and whether your kiddos have already heard many of the topics within this text in sermons, other Bible programs, or through family devotions, we found that the systematic presentation of topics with scheduled discussion along with it is a wonderful way to reach your children's hearts and discuss what you believe (and what they believe too).

In reviewing it more deeply, we honestly feel that older children will get much more out of it than younger students and that the discussions that will result from the study will bear much spiritual fruit in our children's hearts and lives. :D Often as kiddos head into the middle school and high school years, as parents we feel pressure to make everything academically challenging. However, we're finding that rigor and head knowledge are not always the most important goals, especially when it comes to matters of the heart. Often having less material with time to ponder deeply leads to wonderful discussion and insights with time to pursue those very important moments during the day. So, our thought would be to seize the opportunity to use Who Is God? as scheduled twice weekly and utilize it as a springboard to deeper one-on-one discussion with your child. :D If you have a high school student, you could look into using one of Summit Ministries other worldview books for older students if you preferred instead.

Blessings,
Carrie

Thank you Carrie and ladies. I really appreciate the input and things to think about - rather than just looking at the fact of whether we have covered these topics or not, but instead looking at it from the point of view of how they will be covered with this resource.
Thanks!
Karen
