DITHOR question!

Hello everyone,

I am starting DITHOR soon with my dd10 (almost 11). She is in the 5th grade. What do you think about reading the first book aloud together for the first unit she does?? What would Carrie say to this idea?? I think this little bit of hand holding might help my daughter because reading comprehension (and narration) is her weakness academically. Last time we tried DITHOR (one year ago) she was VERY overwhelmed. She is a very strong reader, reading way above her grade level. She also LOVES to read. That is definitely working in my favor!!:) I think if we read the book aloud together that will help me guide her through the literature analysis.

You could have her read all of it aloud to you. If you were doing level 2/3 (which I'm sure you probably aren't), you would have your dd reading to you most of the days anyway. If you did have her read some of it to herself, you could always read it to yourself as well so you could help her in the comprehension if she struggled. Since she is such a good reader, it probably won't hurt any if you read some of it aloud as well, maybe switching off every other page or chapter. it sounds like some discussion along the way will be helpful for her and as time goes on, I'm sure she'll need the help less and less. It sounds like it will be a wonderful time for both of you!

I'm excited for your dd to begin DITHOR. I think she'll have matured quite a bit since the last time. When you say "read aloud together", do you mean her reading it all to you? Or, do you mean you reading some aloud to her, and her reading some aloud to you? I thought I'd better ask before answering.

Actually, that is exactly what I did with 10 yo last year. He struggled with reading, though. We took turns reading and then completed the activities together. Although I don't know what Carrie would say, we had great success with the program by starting out that way. And it was a HUGE blessing!!

I would agree with what the wise ladies have to say! For those kiddos who struggle a bit, I'd typically recommend starting out just as 4Hispraise suggested.
