The Reading Lesson, Chapter 14 question
We are in chapter 12 right now and have just started using the symbols above the letters a little bit more to help my son. I was looking ahead to chapter 14 and noticed the introduction indicates the U should have the long sound (as in you) when there are two dots above it. However, in looking at the words throughout the chapter I notice a few words with the short sound that have the dots above them. Am I missing something or are these typos? Maybe because we haven't been paying attention to the symbols I am not reading correctly?
Words such as full, pull, and put have the two dots above. I guess it is not a big deal, but now that we are looking at the symbols I would like to not confuse him more.

Re: The Reading Lesson, Chapter 14 question
I haven't done TRL so I can't answer for the symbols, but full, pull, etc don't quite have a short u sound as in bus either. They're more like the oo sound as in book. So maybe that's why they chose to do the symbol for the long u because maybe they thought it was closer? I don't know if that was helpful. Hopefully someone who's done TRL will chime in.
I have found on the phonics programs we've used that I don't always agree with their ideas of short and long vowels. I think it could also be a regional thing.

It definitely could be a regional thing.
However, I agree that the /u/ sound in 'full' and 'pull' is the long sound for u. There are two long sounds for u, the /you/ sound and /oo/ sound.

Hi! I noticed this too!
At our house "full" & "pull" have the short "u" sound- for "put" it is more like the "oo" in "book". I figured it was a regional thing, so I took a little white label & cut it into tiny pieces to cover the dots above the u's that we pronouce with a short sound (I wanted to use white-out, but we didn't have any). I hope that doesn't make you more confused- it's just what we did to make things a little easier.

Re: The Reading Lesson, Chapter 14 question
Good insight, it probably does vary. We would not consider pull etc. to be the long U sound, but it is different than the short sound. Now that I am teaching my son, I wonder how any of us learned the English language. I think DS will be more confused with the dots over them so I just might skip it for that chapter or cover those up as suggested.
