Having a hard time choosing the right fit

Hi!

I am having a tough time trying to choose the right fit for my 7 year old. When I looked at the guide to help with selecting, I had an even amount circled in each column. It is between BLFHG and BHFHG. I hope I abbreviated those right. My dd has been reading since she was 4. She reads really well and also spells well for her age. She tries to write sentences, but is still clueless about grammar and punctuation. I don't think she is ready to learn cursive just yet. Is cursive a big part of BHFHG? Sorry for rambling. Thank you in advance for any help.

Bigger does include cursive, Beyond will probably be a better fit for her. There is gentle grammer introduction in Beyond and from what I understand Beyond does alot of prep work needed in order to to do Bigger well.

I was in the same situation as you - 7 year old - been reading since he was a young 4 - excellent speller - he even has a good grip on grammar and punctuation. Even with all of that, I went with Beyond. My son has always grasped concepts easily and my tendency was to push him through it all and keep moving forward instead of really chewing on the concepts and letting it all sink in. So, I decided to go with Beyond so that we could spend the year restoring his joy for learning . . . allowing this new style of learning to become a part of our lives. . . and to just have alot of fun.

He is loving Beyond! It's a great fit for him. . . and his joy has returned.

You may also want to keep in mind that if you do Beyond this year . . . you will be set for HOD through the 8th grade!!

My dd is 7.5 and she is loving Beyond. She enjoys the activities, and each week she copies the entire poem into her poetry copywork notebook. She is doing great with memorizing the Bible verses too. She was ready to learn cursive, so we are using R&S Penmanship for that. It's not a big deal to substitute a different handwriting. We are also using R&S 2nd grade English even though it's not scheduled until Bigger, because dd was ready for it.

So, regardless of which one you choose, you can customize to make sure it's perfect for your dd. I could have put my dd in Bigger, but I didn't want her to miss out on Beyond's history. Plus, I figured Beyond would be a great introduction to the HOD way of doing things, without jumping in with Bigger.

Hi Ladies!

I just wanted to apologize for taking SO LONG to thank you for your help in deciding on the right fit for my dd. We had a pipe burst under our house and had to move in with my parents while they are repairing our downstairs. Needless to say, things are a bit crazy over here and I am finally back to trying to order curriculum for the year.

Thank you all so much for your advice. I am excited to order Beyond for my dd. I think it sounds like a great fit.

My son is also advanced in reading (writing and math too). I first went with Beyond (he is not quite 6 yet), but realized quickly that he was not ready for that level yet in HIstory, Science, and Poetry. He wasn't even ready for the narration after storytime. I dropped back to Little Hearts and it was a perfect fit. My advice to you is to err on the "simpler" side while trying to start a new curriculum. If she is breezing through it, you can always take it faster, finish early, and start the next level. If you start a level too high, then each manual is going to be tougher and tougher for her. Best of luck with your decision!

I just wanted to second all that's been said here already - I think Beyond sounds like a good fit! We are loving the gentle grammar lessons and the solid introduction to narration, copywork, and spelling skills found in Beyond. Having done all of the guides up to CTC (which we're doing now) with my oldest ds, I think Beyond gives important preparation for Bigger Hearts, especially if dc are on the young side of the age ranges. Sorry to hear about the pipe - hope you can be back home soon!
