Early Reader or Beginner's Bible?

Post by MommyInTraining » Tue Jul 14, 2009 2:24 am

My son is just starting to try to read books like Henry and Mudge. He still needs help and will continue in phonics next year. I would like to get him one of the Bibles suggested by HOD for him to read. I would prefer the Beginner's Bible over the Early Reader Bible, but will it be too hard for him?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi, Terri! I am by no means an expert on this. We just started our school year yesterday using LHFHG and BLHFHG. I bought the Early Reader's Bible for my second grader and after one day decided to order the Beginner's Bible. My dd is in the 2nd grade and is reading pretty much on her own. The Early Reader is super easy for her. After looking over the curriculum, I also thought the questions were way to easy. I get the Beginner's Bible tomorrow and will post again after I see it. One thing you can do is go to Amazon.com and look at some of the pages in the Bible. That may help you decide if it is too hard or too easy for your child.

Blessings,
Teresa

Another vote for the Beginner's Bible. My dd is using that one and it's just right. We love the pictures too!

Terri,

Typically the Henry and Mudge level is closer to the Early Reader's Bible level, so you may want to weigh that. I love both Bibles, but the Beginner's Bible is definitely harder than the Early Reader's Bible. Your child would need to be at a mid-second grade reading level to read that Bible well. The Early Reader's Bible is at a beginning second grade reading level. The best Bible will be the one that fits your child's reading level well. :D

It will also make a difference when you are beginning the Emerging Reader's Set, as kiddos do grow and change quickly sometimes. If you're not beginning school for a bit your child may have grown into the harder Bible by the time you begin. However, if you are beginning now, the Bible is the first book on the schedule. So, then you may want the easier Bible to make sure your child is successful. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

i vote for Beginner's Bible. we have using that Bible to read to our kids since they were at least 3. my son loves his Bible. i also loved this one when i taught sunday school.

my son is almost to the Henry and Mudge reading. it seems like he picks up words faster everyday. he is almost finished with Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.(5 more lessons) He was so proud yesterday when he read 2 books from the library that were the "red" level all by himself. By the end of Teach... you kid is supposed to be reading at almost a 2nd grade level.

My son will be 6 in October and will officially be Kindergarten this year. i am thinking that he will be in the Emerging Reader by January or sooner. i am trying to keep his sister(she is 4.5) and he together for History,Science etc in LHFHG and was going to do that part this year starting in January. However, my son's reading level i think is going to be higher than LHFHG .i am going to have him read books at say the 2.2 reading level until i feel he is comfortable. The Beginners Bible i believe is reading level 2.4. at the rate my son is going , he may be reading his own Bible before January!
