What Week are you on/What are your holiday plans?

Post by MamaMary » Sun Oct 26, 2008 11:14 pm

I can't make up my mind if I want to stop the 2nd week in November which would have us complete unit 14 OR do I want to do a couple weeks in December and go through unit 16? In 11 years I've never schooled from Thanksgiving through New Years, but with my dad being sick I am a couple of weeks behind. What week are you on? What are your plans through the holidays?

We are on week 21. :D We started pretty early so we could take it easy. I'm planning to take the week of Thanksgiving off and just do math and phonics and fall crafts. Then I plan to try to school about 3 days/ week and do lots of Christmas-y things from then until Christmas. We'll probably go ahead and start back school right after Christmas though. We're doing LHFHG and it only takes us about 1 hour every day so it' not a huge time commitment, and C has never been to ps so she doesn't know anything about holidays, and she does much better with us leaving her routine alone and not changing things up too much for her. It's noce how HOD is scheduled though because we can just work 3 days and pick up with where we left off the next week, and not feel behind, so that's what we plan to do.

DS 11 and DD 9 - Preparing(completed 2 rounds of LHTH, LHFHG, Beyond, and Bigger)
DD 6 - LHFHG

I had planned to finish Unit 13 of Beyond (First Thanksgiving) the week before the holiday and then take a two week break, but it looks like we'll actually only finish up until Unit 12. Once upon a time that would've driven me crazy!

So we'll just stop at Unit 12 of both programs, take two weeks at Thanksgiving and then go until Christmas week, when we'll take one more. It looks like we won't be able to go home to Canada for Christmas (AGAIN  ) so we'll enjoy our week as a family and then jump right back into school work.

I was just looking at this last night - I think we'll finish up through Week 14, then pick up after the holidays (if I counted right, that will give us a teeny Thanksgiving break, and take us through about the second week of December). I usually do the same as you, but we're expecting a baby in February, so I'm feeling the need to push through as much as possible beforehand. :-)

Well I'm not sure what week we will be on but we are taking off 2 days at Thanksgiving and then some time around Christmas and New Year's but I have to watch my days. I need to have a certain about and I have a goal of being done like early May so we can enjoy the spring weather.

With my oldest ds, we're on week 8 of Preparing... We'll take off only Thanksgiving Day. But then we'll take off Dec. 22-Jan. 2. We'll also take off a week sometime in Jan. or Feb. for a small family vacation. We should be done with Preparing... at this rate by the end of May, and then we'll take off June, July, and August. My middle ds is almost starting unit 33 of LHFHG and we will finish LHFHG in 3 weeks (we're doing school 4 days a week with him too). Then we'll start Beyond... right after that. I'll probably start half-speed with that and see how he does with the writing portion. Then, we'll go full-speed when he's ready (or just finish half-speed, since he's on the younger end of it anyway). I usually end up starting a new program with him in the middle of a year or in January, and starting a new program with my oldest ds in Sept. (like the traditional school year through May). So far, I like this setup of starting one new program in Sept. and one in the middle of the year! :D I'm so glad the plans say "Day 1, Day 2, ..." or I might not be able to give myself the freedom to do it this way (it would be very hard for me to be seeing "Wed." on the plans, and have it be "Mon." in reality  I know, that's strange... but true. )

We're on unit 11 (we'll be on unit 12 before the week is over though), so I think we'll be finishing up unit 14 right before Thanksgiving (does that sound about right???) I honestly hadn't really even given much thought to how much time we would be taking during the holidays. Off the top of my head we will probably do a couple days the begining of Thanksgiving week and take off Wed., Thurs. and Fri. Christmas we will probably take two weeks off. But that is all subject to change...

Well since we haven't even finished all of week 1 yet  I think we will take minimal time off this year. I will probably take off Th. and Fr. for Thanksgiving and then maybe the week of Christmas. We will have to see how busy I get before Christmas. Shees I just need to JUST DO IT :x

We're only one week 2. Hurricanes really messed up our start and we just recently were able to order HOD. We'll probably take minimal time off as well. It's so fun though, I don't think that anyone will mind :)

We're on Unit 12 ans we'll be taking the week of Thanksgiving off and doing a 3-day unit study on Thanksgiving that I found on Currclick. In December we'll be taking at least two weeks off, before it gets here I'll probably look for something Christmassy to do for some of that time.

This is my first "school year" with HOD and we go at a slower pace so I don't want to take too much time off, but I was planning to take one week off for Thanksgiving and the two weeks surrounding Christ mas and New Year's.

However, I may "sneak" in a few math and reading/phonics lessons (I LOVE THE READING LESSON...) during that time AND we do lots of read alouds so that will not change. We are only just now getting into Unit 7 of LHFHG. If I can keep up our pace, this would have us completing Unit 13 (of 34) by Dec 20th.

Thanks everyone for sharing. It has been a real confidence booster getting a "peek" into what other families are doing. I love the variety. It confirms that there really is not a "one-size-fits-all" to hs-ing and that HOD is so flexible.

God Bless,

We're on week 9 of Bigger and LHTH. I actually have no idea what our holiday plans are. (Some of you plan more than a few hours ahead? ) My husband and his family tend not to make long-range plans...you know more than a day in advance. If we have family visiting, we'll hang out and play games with them at my in-laws' house down the road. If there's not much going on, we'll do school. And, we're still tentatively anticipating a visit from my sis and her family for a couple of days before Christmas! (Kelly, I need one of your jumping, excited smilies!! :D )

The absolutely constant thing in our schedule is that the dairy cows don't take holidays. They haven't ever given us Columbus Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day...off! But, we still do get in plenty of family time after we all pitch in on the chores.

I'm sure the kids and I will take plenty of time to "Christmasy" things in Dec, too. We missed out on this last year as we were all set to do baking etc and we went into 8 days with no power before Christmas. We're hoping the ice stays away this year.
