A neat book to add to Beyond...
A neat book to add to Beyond...
I haven't posted in a while, but I had something I wanted to share that I thought some of you might enjoy too. I found a book called Children of the Handcrafts by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey, the same author of Boys and Girls of Colonial Days. Now this book is out-of-print, but I found a copy at one of the used book retailers. You might also find it at your library, but I was not so lucky.
In the book are seventeen "exciting stories about boys and girls who played a part in the development of the crafts in our country" (taken from the bookjacket flap).
Some of the stories include:
The story of Macock Ward, a boy apprentice to the clock-making trade in old Connecticut
The story of Lora Standish, who made the first American sampler
The story about Duncan Phyfe and his fine craftsmanship of furniture
A story about the boyhood of Henry Thoreau, who helped in his father's pencil factory
I'm very excited to work these stories into our studies in Beyond..., and they would probably go great with Bigger...too!

Ooh this does sound wonderful and very living! I wish it were in print, so we could consider it for one of our guides.

I'm only in LHFHG but I am going to buy it. There are lots of these available on ABEBOOKS.com, a great website for used books and often much cheaper than Amazon.
Do you think it matters what edition? 1935, 1946, 1957, 1698 ???
Thanks for sharing !

Re: A neat book to add to Beyond...
Lori, my book is copyright 1964, but I can imagine that it wouldn't make any difference. I don't know if there is a revision from the first edition. My copy has lovely lithographs by Grace Paull. I do wish this book was still in print, as it just seems to fit nicely with Beyond...and Bigger... I hope I haven't overstepped my bounds by suggesting something to add on to what is already included with the programs, but I thought some of you might enjoy the book also. Sorry if I am out of line with my post.

Moving along at our own pace, and very happy with it!

Thanks Vicki. As a result of your post, I ordered a copy from Abebooks today and it was less than $12 (and this includes the shipping). Without pictures it is hard to know exactly what kind of condition it will be in, but it said "good". I cannot wait to get it. Thanks for making the suggestion.

I just wanted to update and let you know that I ordered the book: Children of the Handcrafts by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey through abebooks.com and it arrived in perfect condition. I am seriously not exagerating. It is amazing. I have not always had that kind of "luck". This is one from 1962 even though the book was first published in 1932.
Thanks for the suggestion and I cannot wait to read it myself.
