Rev2Rev Extensions - time required

Post by Rice » Mon Mar 27, 2017 10:12 am

This coming year my 15yo will be usind Rev2Rev for History/Bible/Geo for 10th grade. We will be using Extensions, however, because he has read some of the books already (pre-HOD) and because we are Canadian, I will be substituting some of the books for other Canadian resources. My main concern is that I don't know how much to add for some of the resources. I am assuming that the easiest thing to do is substitute "hours" rather than books, since reading time/difficulty can vary so much.

We will need to substitute for the following resources:
all of the American Testimony DVD's
Poor Richard
Lincoln: A Photobiography
Lee and Grant at Appomattox
Carry a Big Stick

I have pre-read the other books that we will be using so have approximate times for how long they take, but they vary widely (10-25 minutes per reading) and some are combined with the American Testimony tracks, so it's hard to know even an average length per week to aim for.

Any help with figuring out how much to add to our year would be greatly appreciated. Is there a total "hours" that the Extensions are intended to take? Could someone send me the length of the American Testimony tracks (or total listening time)?

Thanks in advance!

My research has led me to believe that for something to count as 1 high school credit, the course should take approximately 120-180 credit hours. The 180 is more for science classes that have labs and I read online that classes like English should amount to 120-150 hours. I don't know that I can help you with say how much you should add, because I don't know how long that will take you, but I can say that my dd is able to complete each box within the time shown on the guide. Below is an analysis of how much time she spends on history currently

History - 25 min x 4 days x 35 units = 3500 min/60min = 58.3 hrs
Written Narration - 20 min x 35 units = 700 min/60 min = 11.7 hrs
Rotating Box - 10 min x 4 days x 35 units = 1400 min/60 min = 23.3 hrs
Independent History - 10 min x 4 days x 35 units = 1400 min/60 min = 23.3 hrs
Storytime - 20 min x 3 days x 35 units = 2100 min/60 min = 35 hrs
History Project - 15 x 3 days x 35 units = 1575 min/60 min = 26.25 hrs
Total time spent history and geography = 177.85

I don't know if you plan to cut any of the items out, like history project or storytime, but even if you did, you would still have enough credits. And with him being in high school, he might read some of these books faster than my dd. So some of the boxes might be a little bit shorter time frames. But I think that even if you take those extensions out and just add what you want to add, you would still be well within enough credits for awarding 1 credit hour for history.

Hmm! I never thought of looking at it that way (all History hours added together). Thanks for figuring out the numbers for me. I'm madly trying to get things prepped for him (he'll finish RTR later this month) to start "next year" in early May, with baby #8 due last Saturday!

Blessings!
