What is the placement for 1st grade?

Post by escapelasosou » Wed Jul 29, 2015 11:03 am

I'm not sure which curriculum to choose for my incoming first grader. I reviewed samples for little hearts for his glory and beyond little hearts for his glory. I have found these differences. LHFHG doesn't include timeline, geography and no spelling. Blhfhg includes spelling, geography and timeline but not handwriting. I like both curriculums however on the BLHFHG books are 3/4 th grade level books is this correct? I really like that LHFHG starts chronologically from creation and ends on American history. What should I do? If I choose BLHFG do you suggest I do a review or a 2 week intro on LHFFHG history ? This will be our first year homeschooling.

Thanks

You need to check out the placement chart to she where your child places skill wise. I think LHFHG is best for 1st, if your child places there, as that lines them up to finish the last guide in 12th.

Neither guide has them reading books on their own for 3rd or 4th grade level. Beyond includes a schedule for the Emergent Readers, which is the next step after phonics. Both guides include phonics in the schedule as well.

How much can your child write (copy) on their own?
How is your child at sitting still and listening to books with few to no pictures?
How old is your child?
What did you do for K?

I was in your place a few years ago with my oldest, trying to decide between LHFHG and Beyond. We went with LHFHG because of her age (she has a fall birthday) mostly. And LHFHG was an amazing year (as was Beyond last year). We did buy the Beyond guide when we bought LHFHG. We tried the spelling, but quickly dropped it, realizing it wasn't necessary at her age. We did start the emerging readers part way through LHFHG, but my daughter is a reader! She LOVES to read, and has read books that I didn't think she would be able to grasp yet (Anne of Green Gables for example).
