Beefing up MtMM or skipping a Guide?

Post by doubleportion » Tue Jul 23, 2013 9:53 pm

I am trying to figure out how to plan the next two years. We are currently into Unit 11 of RtR and my dd is in 7th grade. I am trying to figure out if I should have her skip to MtMM for 8th grade or continue on into Rev to Rev for 8th Grade and then beef up MtMM for 9th grade. I would really like to do all four High School Guides. But as it is now, if I don't skip a guide we will end up one High School Guide short when my dd hits her 12th Grade year. We do school year round, but I know that as the work load increases my dd may need a longer break between school years.

If we skipped RevToRev would she be skipping allot on skill building and history schemata?

I think I would wait and see how easily she is doing RTR towards the end of the year. It was our experience that there was a jump in thinking skills required for Rev to Rev and it took a little longer. The narrations are also longer. There is more reading in Rev to Rev. Overall I would say the jump in skill level from RTR to Rev to Rev was similar to the jump from CTC to RTR. If you didn't do CTC that might not help. We are getting ready to start MTMM and I have looked over the guide quite a bit and it looks like this will be a pretty big jump from Rev to Rev. The amount of written input increases a lot as well as the type of thinking required. The writing program looks more challenging. I can easily see why it doesn't require much beefing up to make it a high school level program.

Hi Edie! :D LynnH gave some good advice. I think once you get closer to finishing RTR, you will be able to see what will be the better choice for dd. With Wyatt, I felt like CTC and RTR were more similar, and then a bit of a jump into RevtoRev, and then RevtoRev and MTMM seemed more similar again. I anticipate the WG being a bit more of a jump and then probably the next year being more similar - but we'll see! :D

Many families will be doing MTMM for their dc's freshman year and not completing the final HOD Guide - in case this is helpful in your decision. :D This scenario would work for counting (history) credits:

9th grade: American History with MTMM
10th grade: World Geography credit
11th grade: World History credit
12th grade: American History (award American History credit at this time for work completed over the 2 years)

In Christ,
