Which MTMM titles have Christian content?

Post by StillJulie » Sat Feb 23, 2013 2:33 pm

I've done a little searching on the board to see if this has already been asked, but I'm not pulling up anything.

Does Evolution: The Grand Experiment primarily look at scientific/concrete evidence, or does it include Scripture verses?

What about Nature Drawing and Journaling?

In the basic package, is it just God's Adventurer, Gladys Aylward, Shadow of His Hand, and Teresa of Calcutta?

In the extension package, anything besides Eric Liddell?

I can tell that Rescue and Redeem, All American History, Hero Tales, the Bible study books, and the hymn book would all be classified as Christian from the main package...

Hi stillJulie! :D Wyatt and I are doing MTMM right now and are having such a great time studying the Modern Times together! :D We have not completed the whole MTMM guide yet and therefore haven't used all the books, and we are not using the extension package as Wyatt is young for them, but I will be glad to try to answer your questions here based on what we have done so far! :D In general, most resources have Christian content. The amount of it varies, but the MTMM guide does a great job of keeping the balance of Christ at the center whiles also accurately representing modern times history.

From the Economy Package, the following books have Christian content...
Rescue and Redeem, Story of the World (includes Christian heroes from around the world too), All American History, Hero Tales 2 and 3, Great Events in American History (events placed in the context of God's kingdom), Books of Great American Speeches (those who are Christian typically have Christian elements as part of their speeches), Explorer's Bible Study: Quest - Faith at Work, Hymn's for a Kid's Heart Vol. 2, Who Am I? And What Am I Doing Here?, Nature Drawing and Journaling (Scripture references, inspirational quotes, and mention of God as the Creator and Creation as His Handiwork), State Study from a Christian Perspective, and What in the World Vol. 3. We have not yet done "Evolution: The Grand Experiment."

From the Basic Package, from what I remember of Wyatt's narrations...
God's Adventurer, Mama's Bank Account, Gladys Aylward, Shadow of His Hand, Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer, I Am David, Children of the Storm, Teresa of Calcutta, The Cereal Tycoon, Eric Liddell, Gunner's Run, Careful Enough.

The book descriptions for the extensions may help with those titles. HTH! :D

Julie

While many of them may have Christian content, how picky are they going to be? Theresa of Calcutta is a historical figure. The speeches are the actual speeches of political figures. Because God is mentioned, will they throw those out? If there is ANY Scripture do they throw it out? I think you can get SOTW and Mama's Bank Account approved. I have not done MTMM, but I have read those. You might be OK with I Am David and Children of the Storm as well. I must admit it has been a while since I read those, so there could be more than I remember. Let us know the degree of scrutiny you are looking at.

I guess I am not understanding the flow of this thread and what is being asked? :D For our kiddos we find MTMM to be a good mix of history told in a way that glorifies Christ and yet does not rewrite history by omitting Christian content. For us, this is a huge positive and something that was very important to me as we wrote the guides. :D

The only thing I can think as to the questions and responses thus far is that you must be seeking to use HOD as part of a government funded program that does not allow any books with Christian content? This is certainly not the purpose we had in mind when we wrote HOD, as it is not written to be a secular program. If that is the case, then perhaps that should be clarified in the thread? :D

I can't imagine foregoing the books in the program that are Christian, as these are very important in a complete telling of history and study of science! Otherwise, we are removing the Creator and just studying His creation. I find this thread pretty confusing from the standpoint of our other board readers who may be wondering what this pertains to? :D Since this board's purpose is to help you use HOD as written in your home, I'd love to help you with that endeavor.

Blessings,
Carrie

I'm sorry for being unclear, Carrie. If this post helps to clarify, you can leave this thread. Otherwise feel free to delete it in order to avoid confusion for others.

I LOVE HOD and will definitely use it as written. I just need to sort out which titles I will be paying for out of pocket and which can be paid for by my tax dollars (I don't like to just say "taxpayer dollars," because I consider those my dollars too since we pay such a huge amount in taxes). We are considering enrolling with a virtual charter school for the next school year. The director asked for my help in determining which titles are which.

As far as pickiness, no consistent standard has been applied so far. They have covered many titles of eastern religions for parents using Sonlight, but not the Christian religion. I do know they consider Bible verses/Scripture references to be a red flag.

Oh dear, I was confused too! I am always from the standpoint that the more books that are Christlike, the better, so I wrote my list based on any inclusion of Christian elements. Please delineate if it helps you use more of the Christian books in HOD somehow. I am not familiar with charter schools and the way they work, but however you can use HOD with all of its resources best was my goal in trying to help. :D

For my purposes, I think what is a reasonable distinction would be the goal/intent of the writer. Things like Bible studies, worshipful hymn studies, etc. would be what I would pay for. Resources that are more historical/facts/informational could be covered.

I think that makes good sense! :D Not sure if my list will help - but hope it will somehow!

With this guideline:
We can pay for books that don't promote a specific religious view. Historic details are OK so long as there's no promotion or assumption that we are all Christian or Baptist or Quaker or Wiccan.
How would you break down the titles in MTMM?
