Suggestions please

Post by skwmackey » Fri Mar 23, 2012 3:09 pm

This fall, my youngest two will be 5 and 4. Originally, I had thought about placing them in separate guides for next year, but now I'm not quite sure. I don't mind doing separate guides, but they have always been a pair, and I know they would enjoy doing a lot of school things together excluding math and language arts. We are using LHTH this year, and it is going pretty well. Of course, the oldest does understand a bit more. I know our 4 year old will not be ready for LHFHG this fall.

My question is what should I do for this upcoming year? I definitely plan to do the fine motor, phonics, and math part of LHFHG for the oldest. What should I do for history and science? I don't want to do all of it with him this year and then repeat it again the next year with him. I also don't mind separating them, but if I can make it work to combine them, I know they would enjoy it.

Could you repeat LHTH with the older activities and older book choices? As well as add the right side basics from LHFHG for older DS?

That's what I was going to suggest too. The activities would be the same but I think at this age kiddos don't mind a repeat. You could get a different Bible and devotional plus use the basics from LHFHG. Then the next year when you do LHFHG you can do the older options for the basics in it. Ages 5 & 4 is still pretty young anyway!! HTH

I would even say just do the right side LHFHG with the older one, then when they are doing LHFHG you could do the older options for the older one and the younger options for the younger one.

I think you can definitely keep your 2 sweeties together - and I think you are a wise woman to want to do that! They are only 1 year apart, and they are relatively close to each other skillwise. Sounds like keeping them together would be a super idea! I like the ideas the ladies have already shared here too! :D I think using the higher level Bible and devotional, as well as having your 5 yo just do the right side of LHFHG would be nice. Since LHTH is full of wonderful Biblical history, I think it is neat to do it again - double-dipping, and even triple-dipping our dc in Bible stories just is a wise thing to do, especially when they are little ones and don't always remember everything they hear read to them so clearly (at least my 5 yo doesn't  ). I think having the extra time doing LHTH as your core program would afford would give you ample time to really work on phonics instruction, writing instruction, and beginning math instruction - this would be so nice. I forgot how much time and patience (on the part of the mama - at least for this mama :) ) teaching phonics and writing can require. Having the time to focus on these with just one child this year, and then with your younger of the pair the next year would really be a blessing! HTH!
