Week 8 Day 2 Bigger Science

Post by GinainMD » Wed Nov 16, 2011 7:19 am

Hello everyone! My girls and I are working through Bigger and loving it. I was helping them this past week with the science notebooking and was a bit confused. Maybe someone here can clarify. It is the notebooking page where the students make a drawing of the planets and it gives measurements for each and the sun. I understood it to be measurements of the size of the planets but if that is the case than it shows jupiter to be larger than the sun. :?: So I started thinking maybe the measurements were for distances between the planets rather than sizes. Or is this just a typo? TIA

hmm... we did measurements between the planets if I recall correctly.

We cheated, and I printed out the planets for him to color. Then we glued them on the paper in order, but because they were printed, the planets themselves were too big for us to use the measurements.

So basically, I'm no help. Although, it does sound like it would be the distances, since Jupiter isn't bigger than the sun.

The sun should be 1400 mm, as it is 10 times the size of Jupiter. I talked with Carrie, and we've noted the correction.

Thanks so much! So the measurements are for the relative size of the planets. So glad to know.

Wow... now I want to go back and do that over again... We wrote the planet names on index cards and used the measurements as distance (at least I'm pretty sure.... maybe I skipped that one because we have done a unit study on the planets....)
