Results for Stanford Achievement Test

I received the results for the Stanford Acheivement Test for my ds who finished 8th grade.
I haven't tested him before because our state does not require it, however, because he will
be going into high school, I wanted to see how he is progressing. His total reading grade
equivalent is 9.7. His comprehension is 8.1. Everything else is PHS, which means post high school.
Thank you Carrie for writing this HOD curriculum. I am so grateful. This will be our sixth year
using HOD, going into 9th grade with World Geograply.

Wow! I am new to HOD so this is very encouraging news! We haven't done testing so I have to ask what do the reading scores mean? I'm not aware of the scale used to measure skills.

Congratulations on good scores. Just to clarify what the grade equivalent scores mean. They mean that for the reading if the average 9th grade and 7 month student took the same test that they would score the same as your student. I hope that makes sense. I am a certified Stanford Test Administrator and they make sure we understand that it doesn't mean your student is ready for that grade level it just means what I stated above. The score they encourage you to look at is the overall percentile scores that are shown on the graph. If your student scores in say the 70th percentile then this means that they score higher than 70 percent of those the same age taking the test.

My boys recently took the IOWA (testing is required in our state) with very similar results. My 8th grader has used all the guides from LHFHG to CTC (starting MTMM in August), and his scores were lovely. His math composite was 8.7, but pretty much everything else was 13+ (the IOWA's version of PHS). My 5th grader scored 5.2 for reading (he's dyslexic, so I was thrilled with that), and all other scores were in the 7th grade range. The IOWA shows you the number of questions the child answered correctly, and he didn't miss a single history question. He's done all guides from LHTH through Preparing.

While I know that tests like this are just a snapshot, it's still nice to have our less traditional educational choices validated. Thanks, Carrie, for making it such a blessed and easy path!

We just got our Iowa test scores back today and I too am very pleased with the results. My dd overall composite percentile was 95 and my ds was 93. So it means they did better than 95% and 93% of everyone who took the test. YEAH HOD!!!!

My dd struggles in Math and after switching to a combo of Singapore/MM for the last 1 1/2 years, her percentile jumped over 20%.

Our dc have used HOD exclusively through the past 10 years, my oldest from LHTH to MTMM, my middle from LHTH to CTC, and my youngest LHTH and LHFHG. They have all scored extremely well, and I do credit HOD for it. Something that is interesting is tracking skills from the early years to middle school. I find that around 3rd grade or so, areas that are more challenging emerge for each of our sons, as well as areas that are more natural strengths. What is interesting to me is that as they continue to progress through HOD guides and mature, skills that were struggle areas improve steadily, while the natural strengths continue to be strong. My eldest ds, who struggled early on with spelling, scores well above average in all LA areas now, for example. HOORAY! Thanks for sharing, ladies - this is an encouragement to HOD users!
