Bigger in a FOUR DAY schedule?

Post by hughes1003 » Thu May 23, 2013 7:31 pm

Hello,
I'm new here and have my first question :-). My son goes to a co op on Fridays and we will not be able to do any schooling at home that day. Can anyone recommend how to do Bigger in a FOUR day schedule? Day 5 looks so good, as do the all, that I don't want to just omit it.
Thanks!
Heather

Heather,

I'll just move this post over to the Main Board, so more moms will see it. All new posts begin on the Main Board. :D

As far as your question goes, in your situation we'd recommend doing Bigger 4 days a week and then setting it aside on your co-op day. Then, on your next school day, you would pick up where you left off and go forward. This would mean that at the end of the school year you would have approximately 8-9 weeks remaining to complete of Bigger at the beginning of the next school year.

We wouldn't recommend trying to cram two days into one day or adding more to the days earlier in the week to get 5 days into 4 days. You'll lose the whole flow of the guide if you try this.

Once you get to the guides from Preparing Hearts on up, they are 4 day plans. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

We have been doing Bigger Hearts 4 days a week. While it definately isn't ideal, it is what has fitted us as a family. I just do one whole day worth and the next column each day. So on Mondays, we do double history and two rotating boxes. On Tuesday we finish Day 2 and do half of Day 3 which doubles up on poetry, bible study and music. Wednesday is the second half of Day 3 and then 3 columns of Day 4 which double ups on Language Arts and Science. On Thursday, we finish Day 4 and all of Day 5 so it doubles up Storytime and Math. We do DITHR three days a week, Mon, Wed and Thurs because we also do it with our oldest DD.

Hope that helps.

I thought about trying this too, but honestly it would be really difficult! I guess what Molly said will work. Bigger just had such full days for the teacher and student, it would feel like a lot to try to do more than one day's worth of plans in a day. Plus you would lose a little bit of the flow and cohesiveness of the plans doing it that way. I had a co op this year. I did school on a few holidays and we are doing some this summer to complete the guide in a year's time. Then next year we will enjoy the 4 day plan in Preparing!

We just finished Bigger in April and it is such an important guide I really wouldn't try doubling up, especially if the child were 7 or 8 yrs old. I would just do as Carrie suggested.
