Really behind-what can I do over summer?
I have Preparing, and really want to use it, but we got super sidetracked this year. I am continuing math & LA over the summer, but at a lighter pace. Will that goof things up too much? When I say LA, I am just talking R&S, not the poetry or dictation.
I'm freaking out a little at being too behind next year, but I don't want them to do regular school all through summer.

So you are just going to finish Math and LA and then move on to the next guide? Or finish Preparing up in the fall? You don't have to do them in a specific grade level, and I would think finishing would be a better idea. I did do just Math and Reading with my DD last spring after my DS was born. We got ahead in the guide of where we would be with the other subjects, but we are finishing it all (this is Bigger Hearts). I'm not always a finisher but I have decided even if it takes us longer than a school year (it will) we are just going to go ahead and finish it. She wouldn't be ready to move up anyway.

When we get busy and a bit behind, I keep going ahead with math and cursive for ds9. It has taken us a while to finish Bigger, but I just take a deep breath and try to relax about it because he seems to be right where he needs to be! We will have five more weeks of school before breaking for the summer and then finish up the last few weeks of the guide in August.

I was hoping to finish Preparing in the fall. I'm just getting nervous about being behind again with history. I know it will probably work perfectly for my ds 9, because writing has always been an issue. He's a great oral narrator, but the writing...... I suppose I could have my dd do the extensions. Also, DITHOR is something we aren't currently using, but I've been thinking about adding.MelInKansas wrote:So you are just going to finish Math and LA and then move on to the next guide? I love HOD, but I start to get nervous when we aren't "keeping up".

I do the opposite. If we are behind I just focus on getting through the guide and leave the basics off. I figure they can catch up in the summer time or on their own time with those.

I never thought of doing that, but it actually makes sense! I am having mine continue with math & eng. over the summer, because it's easy to fit in & they don't have to do it every day. The left side would be too difficult over the summer. And if we focused on getting through the main things & left the basics off when time was tight, they would enjoy it more.

We are way behind too. My plan is to work through all of May to get to Unit 14 or 15. We'll take June off because my kids are involved in a mission trip, VBS, and other summer activities. I'd like to get another 3 or 4 units done in July, then take another break before starting back up again in August to hopefully wrap Preparing up by early Nov.
Have used:
Bigger, Preparing, CTC
Son, 17, with dyslexia, doing MtMM with extensions
Daughter, 14, using Rev to Rev with extensions

That makes me feel better but you are more disciplined than I am, because other than the basics, I just don't think we can get anything else done. I am going to really not try to put a time limit on us, because then I start to feel the pressure.mom2samlibby wrote:We are way behind too. We are actually going to do some art & music this summer, because my dc are interested in artist and composers, and I never can fit them in.

What about like 1/2 speed or something? 1/2 of a day's worth in a day? Then you'd be progressing forward in the guide at least. I set a goal for myself to try and get 8 more weeks of our guide(s) done this summer - which is starting now and goes through the end of July so in about 12-13 weeks. I guess I'm "behind" too but again, I don't really feel like it's behind. We've put in the appropriate school hours, and learned, and progressed. I'm sure your kids have too.
I did something similar to what you're describing, we did just math and reading for a while last summer. Because those aren't really tied to the guide, those subjects don't connect to the history/Bible/science reading they can be paced as you want. My oldest is going to finish Singapore 2A/2B quite a while before we finish up the Bigger guide. We'll just move on to 3A then.
Best wishes to you!

We are behind where I'd like to be too, and I just plan to do the basics (math, LA, and maybe science and definitely have them continue with reading for fun) until the beginning of June, when we will take 2 mo. off.
