More questions about LHFHG

Post by SarahAngeline » Wed May 01, 2013 3:32 pm

Hi everyone,

I've been asking a lot of questions lately and I so appreciate all the helpful replies! :-) Here's another one:

Do I need to add anything "extra" to do LHFHG with my son for Kindergarten? Things such as, doing a daily calendar to learn the days of the week/months of the year, learning your address, phone number, also social studies kind of stuff... Just kinda curious to hear if this stuff is covered... Wondering what others have done! I like to keep things as simple as possible without adding too much of my own stuff into the mix, but I want to make sure my guy learns everything he needs to learn in Kindergarten. Thanks!

Although it is not done daily, the kids do learn the days of the week and months of the year in order through LHFHG. I don't remember about the address and phone number part. I'm doing it this year, but I don't remember covering that. I may have accidentally skipped it though so someone else may be able to answer! :) I keep a school room type calendar up where we school, but I don't use it much. I had intended to each morning, but just didn't get get around to it. Maybe next year!

I don't add in a lot of extra stuff. I did start with spelling simply because my daughter asked. That is pretty much my rule. I don't add in with HOD unless my daughters ask for something more in a particular subject they are interested in.

Hi Melissa, thank you for your reply! =-) I know they probably assume that you're going to just teach your children these kinds of things... Things like address, phone number, city, state. I am a stay at home Momma now but I grew up with parents who worked a lot (Mom worked two jobs a lot of the time and my Dad is also an ordained minister). We were always really tight financially and although my parents are amazing parents and amazing people, we ended up living in survival mode a lot of the time and sometimes I feel like some of the real obvious teaching that is just assumed that parents will teach their kids on their own apart from school was sometimes not taught to us due somewhat to a poverty mentality. I'm not naturally domestic and I don't naturally know wether or not I need to do a calendar with my kids, etc. :-) I AM naturally hard working because my parents are VERY hard working. I never dreamed in a million years that I would be able to be in ministry AND be a stay at home Mom (my two dreams realized, thank you Jesus- He is so good!). Anyway we are home owners and I am getting to experience that type of thing that my parents could never afford when we were growing up. I guess I just often feel that things that are obvious to others are not always obvious to me in terms of what I need to make sure my kids are aware of... I know this is a super LONG response... =-)

Anyway, just want to make sure I don't miss anything. Thanks and God bless ya! =-)

Thanks for sharing some of your story :)

I actually felt very much that same way when I started homeschooling and there have been a few things along the way that HOD threw in and I thought, "Oh yeah. I guess I should have thought of that before!" It is so good to feel I can trust this curriculum to cover what I don't think of!

You'll do fine :)

We are nearing the end of LHFHG and I'm pretty sure I remember all the basics being covered through one box or another. I know we covered days of the week and months of the year through one of the rhymes in motion. We covered seasons through history and the coordinating rotating box. I think story time covered full name and address and maybe a page in the fine motor skills book covered phone number. It's amazing how well all these little details are worked into the program and you can always add a little more practice in after the fact if you feel they need it.

Thanks everyone for your responses, :)

I guess I just have moments of panic where I am concerned about missing some big obvious detail! It's great to know that it is all covered. The Lord has given my husband and I a real peace about using HOD and we are excited to get started!

Hmmm.... my 2nd grader doesn't know her phone number or address. Maybe I am missing something too!

I have done the guides and plans as written, but 1-2 days of reviewing information like a phone number or address doesn't make it stick for my kids. And I didn't pursue reviewing it further. That and the calendar I have approached from a perspective of their interest level and discussions we have. We have a calendar on the wall that has things marked on it because my kids always ask me "when are we going to....?" We learned days of the week with days of the week underwear, and the calendar, but my K girl, the one in LHFHG, doesn't remember them consistently.

I think you just learn these things as you do life. I suppose if you wanted to review it regularly they would learn it and it would be a fact they could tell people, especially if they got lost or something. Maybe I should just put a homing device in my kids. I'm joking.

Maybe I'm over-thinking, then! :) Truth be told, I know that my kids will just learn these things as we "do life." I've got to stop comparing them to public school kids ...
