Getting ready for the coming school year.

Post by joyfulhomeschooler » Sun Mar 24, 2013 5:12 pm

Just wondering what others do to get ready for the next school year. I've got all our Preparing stuff and have been wanting to prepare for Preparing :) Do you go through the guide week by week? What do you get set up and when do you start? Just thought it would be fun to see what others do.

First I clean up my bookshelves and organize all the books. :D

Hi there! I like to read the "Introduction" of each guide with hi-lighter in hand and jot what I choose for supplies in the margin. I also like to skim the Appendix, as there are always important things there. I've gone to labeling each of the books with a white sticker and a heart (for Heart of Dakota :D ), as well as the guides initials (i.e. PHFHG), and its purpose (i.e. Storytime). This helps when the dc beg to reread the books later the next year and I have to find them back for the next child. :D I also like to use 2 tubs, one for the books we are using, and one for the books to come. I store these in the kitchen as that's where we do a lot of our homeschooling. A mobile art supplies container is nice too. We use the Pampered Chef Tool Turnabout. Here is a great past thread to enjoy reading too...

Best tips for peace, sanity, or really helpful stuff!

Have fun getting ready for PHFHG - it is an awesome guide all around! :D

Thanks so much ladies! I am really enjoying reading through these old threads. Gleaning so much information and inspiration. I really like the link for the tips on finding peace. Read through the entire thread until midnight last night.

Thanks for those threads Julie. They were a blessing.

To get ready for the new school year, I organize, organize, organize! I organize almost to the point of never starting school. :D

I use colored round stickers to color-code the different years of HOD. It makes for very easy organizing and it makes sure all the books I need will be there when the time comes around to do the program again.
Wife to a great guy and mommy to:
Ds(15) - using WG and loving it!
Dd(11) - using Res.to Ref and having a blast!
Ds (3) - our joy!
Two little ones in the arms of Jesus - I can't wait to hold you in Heaven!

Oh what a fantastic idea!! I have all our "used" books in a tub together and all our "to be used" books in a tub together. This would help tremendously when getting them out for the next child!

   I laughed out loud at this! This is a match for me 99% of the time! :D This past year though, due to my dad's health and a variety of other unforeseen things, I just started. Both ways worked somehow! :D Though I sure FELT better the years I organized first. :D I guess that's the beauty of HOD. :D Next year, you remind me, and I'll remind you, "OK, just stop with the organizing already and START!" :D :D :D

Thanks! Glad to have helped in some small way! :D It helps me round up the HOD books they have reread all summer in their rooms too - I just check their shelves for the white labels and the hearts and sort them, then we are good to go! :D

Put a piece of washi tape on each book that goes with preparing, as well as on the guide. I picked red this time. For bigger, I used striped washi tape :) This was we can keep track of all the books that go with each guide. I then stocked up on composition notebooks, because we use those for our common place book, vocabulary notebook, and history notebook. LOTS AND LOTS of pencil sharpeners! tempra paints and paint brushes too. I stock up on post it notes and tabs as well. Everything else is pretty much stuff you have around the house already. The only extra thing I bought was a globe at a yard sale. Good luck! I think preparing for the new academic year is just about the most fun time of all!

*eep! Sorry about that Mods!*
