I do not want to start DITHR until later maybe fall. I don't want to use up the books I have to use with DITHR from that book pack but I want him to keep reading and keep moving forward. So what do you think I should do for him. Should I just let him pick something here to read to me. Or are there any suggestions as to what I might do for him. I guess I could get books from one of the other sets for him.
I am library challenged. I just can't do something that takes me away from the house another day of the week, I just can't. I know the library is not a whole day but by the time I get ready and get everyone ready and get there the look for stuff it really has taken a lot of time.
Maybe I could just use them and then get other books later when I need them. hmmmm...

Could one of your older children go to the library for you? I often look online at the catalogue to check a book is there and send one of my girls.

Here's the secret to successful library usage (unless you just want to buy books in which case you can still find plenty of good ones other than the DITHR books, really you can). Online requests: Look up the book(s) you want online, at night after your kids go to bed (or early in the morning, or during naptime/rest time if you do that), and request them from the library. Then all you (or hubby) have to do is run in and pick up the books you've requested. I know library trips are a hassle but they have become a once-every-two-weeks must and I will say I think my oldest daughter's love of reading has been fostered and expanded. I can find lots of good early readers now for my 6YO who is really taking off because we are doing a read-a-thon with our homeschool group right now. She is competitive and wants to try to keep up with her sister.

Keep the DITHR books for when you actually do DITHR. I did buy the book list from HOD but a lot of those books are only available through BJU or other specific publishers and not just through Amazon or something easy like that. Not easily available at the library, more for additional ideas that are not as easy to get. There's an AR book finder you can use to determine reading level as well as interest level (so you can find books that fit your child's reading level and age) of any book. Also I browse Homeschool Classifieds and have gotten book packs there that my daughter has enjoyed for supplemental reading. Really though, the library is so worth the time and effort IMO, even though because I use it so much I do end up paying fines and occasionally buying a book when we've lost it.

You said you don't want to use the DITHOR books you already have, but If I were you I'd have your son read those books now so he can continue progressing, and then I'd buy the next level book pack when you're ready to start DITHOR. That seems like the simplest solution to me, but of course I don't know why you don't want to use those books yet.

Some ideas.
Have him/her read the supplemental titles suggested in the ER schedule.
Have him/her read the level 2 book pack and then start DITHR with the level 3 books.
Get the DITHR book idea list and choose ones from there that aren't used in the book packs.
You could do any combo of these.

I'd have him start reading the DITHOR Level 2 Book Pack books very slowly, as in half a chapter a day or a chapter a day if they are very short. When you start DITHOR, just use the remaining books in the pack. When you finish, you can move on to the Level 3 Book Pack. Or, you can start DITHOR now, half-speed, doing the writing for ds. HTH!
