Carrie or anybody: When did you work in a state study?
Carrie or anybody: When did you work in a state study?
Here in PA, we have to include a study of our state. Typically, in PS, it's done in fourth grade. Due to my ds's learning issues (dyslexia), we never got around to it. We just have SO MUCH TO DO each day! However, I need to work it in at some point. My dd will need it as well in the future. When have you best worked it in to an already full program? Any recommendations for materials?
Thanks,
Laura

It's scheduled to be done in Missions to Modern Marvels if I remember correctly.
Though I'm tempted to just use a couple of weeks and do a lapbook on our state and call us covered for my older two

Yes, MTMM is correct. I just ordered and received our materials recently!

You can also do a quick state study in the summer when you are on break. It is scheduled for MTMM though.

In the PA law, I thought it said that you had to do US and PA history. I did not take that to be a full state study unless I'm missing something. We normally hit at least one historical site each year as a field trip which has always fulfilled our requirements. Last year we spent 2 days in Old Philadelphia and this year we toured Valley Forge. I usually include a brochure and a picture with the portfolio and haven't had any complaints yet. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Carrie or anybody: When did you work in a state study?
Our state, (Missouri) also wants a state study done during fourth grade. I wish I would have found this resource earlier, but if you google "Studies Weekly", they can provide you with a State study on whatever State you choose. It comes in a "newspaper" form for the kids, and in spite of it coming from a secular standpoint, I find it very reasonable in cost (under $9.00 for around 34 weeks of study) and very readable for my children. The first issue had something to say about "millions of years ago" when they were talking about "prehistoric times" in Missouri, but other than that, haven't found any other anti-Biblical teaching. (but we haven't gotten too far yet). I'm going to be requiring my kids to read it this summer....
