R & S English is considered advanced, and levels 7 and 8 are high school credit worthy. To keep English in balance with the rest of the LA work in the guides, HOD has a goal for students to complete Level 6 by the end of Grade 8. With this end goal in mind, there are several different paths students can take to get there, utilizing whichever plan fits them best (depending on their age, when they are starting R & S English, if they are coming from a different grammar program, etc.). So, here are the R & S English options scheduled in the HOD guides that you can choose from...

Bigger Hearts - R & S English 2, daily, entire text completed
PHFHG - Choose between R & S English 3 and 4, daily, entire text completed
CTC - Choose between R & English 4 and 5, scheduled twice a week, first half of the text completed
RTR - Choose between R & S English 4 and 5, scheduled twice a week, last half of the text completed
RevtoRev - Choose between R & S English 5, daily, entire text completed; R & S English 6, daily, BUT each lesson is split to take 2 days, so half the text is completed
MTMM - Choose between R & S English 6, daily, entire text completed; R & S English 6, daily, BUT each lesson is split to take 2 days, so the second have of the text is completed

We are in R&S 2. It is really just your basic nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns, using words in correct order, alphabetizing, learning to put words in the correct order, and a few other things. It is very easy to follow. I don't even use a teacher guide with it. I have not seen R&S 5 or any others than 2, so I don't know what they consist of. But, if you are only on LHFHG, don't worry about it. Concentrate on now. I also have a tendency to look too far into the future and then it affects what I am doing now because I lose focus. When I read about things coming up in future guides, I wonder how my struggling dd could even handle some of those things. But, I have to remind myself that she is going to learn a lot of other things before she even gets to that point. I have no clue where she will be 3 or 4 years from now. I can't worry about that. I just need to concentrate on what she is doing now. You will do fine. Enjoy what you are doing now and trust the Lord for the future.

Thanks for the encouragement! I have an older son that struggles in English so I was looking at R&S 5 for him. So when I saw what it was like at 5 I thought I might not want to start my young guys out on it and then be wanting to change them later. Does that make sense?

For those of you who do R&S 2 orally, how do you do it? I have been having my son write out his answers in a notebook after I go over the lesson with him. He's been complaining about not liking English recently, so I am thinking having him do some of the lessons orally. My fear is that he won't retain it or learn it as well if I switch to doing it orally, especially since he's been writing it out. Any thoughts out there on that? Also, we do both spelling and dictation. My son is a natural speller, so we have zipped through the BHFHG spelling units and are done with them. The dictation is very easy for him as well. I would like to continue with spelling, but not sure where to go. Any ideas?

One of the biggest things you miss if you don't do Rod and Staff is the additional writing instruction. I know in the upper guides Carrie skips some lessons in the writing programs because they have already been covered in Rod and Staff. Rod and Staff also covers things like outlining, note taking etc. When I first started HOD with Preparing I looked at Rod and Staff and freaked out and didn't do it. It looked so overwhelming. So many things I had never learned in school. I used Growing with Grammar for a little while but he had zero retention with it. I then used CLE and there was so much work in each days lesson and so much of it we didn't need like the spelling. Neither one of these programs included writing lessons so I did Igniting Your Writing with Preparing to try and cover enough writing. Well the following year I went to Rod and Staff and it doesn't seem confusing at all. We did almost all of it orally due to my ds's writing challenges and his retention is very good.

I just have them tell me what they would write. We just started yesterday with Grace and she was supposed to write the ones that were complete sentences. I just had her tell me which ones were complete sentences. I put my fingers under the line they are working on, just to make sure they are looking at the right one. With Jayden we even diagram orally sometimes! I'll have her tell me and draw in the air with her fingers what would go where, or if there is a sentence diagrammed on the page I'll just have her use that frame for the sentence we are doing. But like I said, I just have them tell me what they'd write. So far (with Jayden) we have had no issues with retention, and in fact possibly have more retention on the ones she does orally vs the ones she writes.

For spelling, just keep going with dictation. It'll eventually get more difficult. Grace is also a natural speller. So at this point (two weeks into dictation) I let her do as many dictation passages in a day as she wants to as long as she gets them all correct. If she misses anything (and I mean ANYTHING) she stops there and repeats that one the next day (like it's supposed to be). Like I said, she's two weeks in, but what that means is that she's done it maybe 4 or 5 times? Anyway, she's on the first level on dictation 16. It took her a couple of days to learn HOW to do dictation (how to study, what to look for) and then she took off with it. Once she gets to a part she has more difficulty with we'll slow down to one per day.

But I've even noticed with my oldest that even if they are having trouble with a section, sometimes they'll just "get it" and then need to move ahead a bit.
