Singapore math Activities for 1B
Singapore math Activities for 1B
Hi! I've been mulling over getting HOD Bigger for my soon to be 2nd grader and 5th grader. My 2nd grader will probably need to be in Singapore 1B next year not the 2A/2B as given in the Bigger HOD book. Are the hands on activities for 1B in the appendix of the Bigger book or can I only find them in the Beyond book? If they're only in the Beyond book, is it worth the money to get the Beyond guide just to get my hands on the math activities? My 2nd grader is still very much a hands on/game kind of girl. Or, is there a teacher's guide book for Singapore 1B?
I've also thought maybe I should do the Preparing HOD program rather than Bigger with both girls, but my 2nd grader has had little to no American history. I wasn't sure if my 5th grader would be able to do Preparing independently. She's had quite a bit American history, but isn't a real strong independent learner. Any thoughts on this?
This will probably be the first of my many questions, so thanks in advance for your patience!

Hi Kristi! A big HOD welcome to ya!
LeeAnn is right, you have to have the Beyond guide to have the activities.
Do you plan to start now or in the fall?? I think you'd be fine to just work your way through the 1B book over the summer w/o the Beyond guide....you could just look ahead at what the next concept is and plan some sort of activitiy with manuipulatives OR you could purchase the textbook that goes with the workbook and be ok. Then she'd be all ready to jump into 2A when you start Bigger.

Just to clarify; 1A/1B is in Beyond & 2A/2B would be in Bigger? I would like to purchase the Guides for math too. We plan to use HOD in the future anyway

YES. 1A/1B is in Beyond, 2A/2B is in Bigger.Homeschooling6 wrote:Just to clarify; 1A/1B is in Beyond & 2A/2B would be in Bigger? I would like to purchase the Guides for math too. We plan to use HOD in the future anyway![]()
Earlybird Math 2A/2B is in LHFHG.
I bought the textbooks because that's way Carrie sold them at first. My son didn't like doing the textbook so when Carrie said on the board that you didn't need to use the textbook if you were doing the activities, I dropped it.

The hands-on math activities that Carrie wrote in the guides are really good, so I do think having the HOD guide for them is a good idea. If you're going to use the guide anyway again for your younger children especially, it's so worth it. Otherwise, Melanie had a great idea of doing 1B through the summer, if that's an option you could work with.
As LeeAnn said...
1A/1B is in Beyond, 2A/2B is in Bigger.
Earlybird Math 2A/2B is in LHFHG.
These are the levels that have the hands-on parts planned for them in each of the HOD guide's daily plans. In each HOD guide's Appendix, there are other levels of math scheduled out day by day - but they don't have the coordinating math activities with them. Here are those:
In Beyond...: 2A/2B is scheduled in the Appendix
In Bigger...: 3A/3B is scheduled in the Appendix
Just thought I'd mention that!
As far as whether you'd use Bigger... or Preparing..., have you gotten a chance to look at the placement chart? That's really easy to use and helpful for placement. Here's a link to that:

You'd mentioned that you fifth grader might not be ready to be independent enough to do Preparing... - so based on that, I'd be steering you in the direction of Bigger... right now. But, after checking out the Placement chart, if you'd like to chat about it more, please post again with any new information about your thoughts regarding placement according to the chart.
We're just finishing Bigger..., and had a great year. I'm sure you and your children would enjoy it too!

Wow! I am absolutely thrilled over all of the comments received and great advice given. I don't feel so alone in this new adventure. I've homeschooled my oldest for 2 years, but next year I've decided to homeschool my soon to be 2nd grader. Homeschooling two at once has overwhelmed my perfectionistic mind. Plus, I hope to throw in Little Hands for my soon to be 4 year old.
I've looked at so much curriculum lately that my head often ends up spinning. I'm finally feeling "peace" in the direction I'm suppose to go. Loved the idea of doing Singapore 1B over the summer. I'm going to give that a try. Plus, I'm leaning towards Bigger. I think it'll be easier for me to keep both older girls in the same program.
Thanks a bunch, ladies!

That's sounds like a great plan to me! That is what attracted me to HOD in the first place.....wanting to combine my kiddos. It just makes life so much easier. Bigger and Little Hands should make for a great year!ksjk3 wrote: Plus, I'm leaning towards Bigger. I think it'll be easier for me to keep both older girls in the same program.

ksjk3,
I just wanted to welcome you too!
The ladies have done a wonderful job of helping you talk through your options. I am in complete agreement that "Bigger..." is the way to go, especially since this will be your 2nd grader's first homeschool experience! It's great to give them time to decompress.
Plus, your 2nd grader and 5th grader are exactly in the target age-range for "Bigger.." (with extensions).
We're glad you're here!
Blessings,
Carrie
