Officially Homeschooling starting today!

Post by jensmom » Sat May 17, 2008 8:20 pm

My daughter graduated from a church kindergarten and we officially became homeschoolers today. She will be in 1st grade in the fall but right now I am starting with Singapore Kindergarten Math to make sure that she is ready before I start the 1st grade program. We also started "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons". She is a stumbling reader so we are going to speed through the first lessons and then take more time when it gets tougher. We also did some sight words today. All in all we got in 1 hour and 15 minutes on a Saturday! Not a bad start.

I plan to take it slowly right now and then we will be using BLHFHG for our 1st grade curriculum. I am very excited about getting started with BLHFHG but want to make sure that she is really ready before starting.

I am looking forward to being an active member of this community in the fall. I am very, very happy that I found this curriculum!!!

Hello Judy!

I want to wish you luck as you begin homeschooling your daughter. I plan to also use Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons for my daughter. Please let me know how it goes as I am curious. It has worked successfully for several of my friends but I am always curious to learn more.

Hi Judy! I can feel your excitement as you begin homeschooling...I bet your daughter is excited if you are, too! :D Have you checked out the part of the message board for weekly check-ins? I LOVE reading all of the stories about the neat activities and learning that is going on in everyone's homes! I think you're in for a real treat with Beyond. I'm using LHTH...and am soon to use Bigger and DITHOR with my kiddos.

I wouldn't be in a huge rush to have reading down before you start Beyond...you can finish your phonics up as you go. (Not that you can't work on it over the summer, but HOD doesn't assume that you are totally done with phonics before you start Beyond.)

Thank you for your welcoming words! I am so very excited about homeschooling and am looking forward to getting to know all of you and your children through this forum. Jen is happy to be homeschooling but hit a glitch yesterday. She thought that we were just homeschooling for the summer and then she was going to school in the fall. :( When I explained that we were going to continue homeschooling she was very upset....She wanted to use her other bookbag that we bought last year that we had saved for 1st grade! LOL!! When I told her that she could still use her backpack for homeschooling she was very happy again. Let's hope that all the hurdles are this easy to jump.

We have completed 5 of the 100 Lessons for Teach Your Child to Read. So far so good. It is still very low level so I have not real comments at this point. I will keep you all posted.

That's funny about the backpack  It's great though that is was so easily resolved. I'm glad it is going so well. I don't know if I can wait until fall to start LHFHG or not! Hearing all these great reports makes me want to start now :D

Judy -
Welcome to the HOD board, and I'll be doing Beyond... along with you next year too! It's my second time doing it, so I know we're going to have a good year. That story about the backpack is so cute - isn't it funny what goes through our kids' minds sometimes?

Happy@home -
Welcome to you, too! It's so exciting to start LHFHG, and I know you and your son are going to love it.

This is a wonderful community of ladies here on the HOD board - and it just got even better with you 2 becoming a part of it!

How exciting! It sounds like you are off to a great start! And I agree finding HOD early on is a blessing! Enjoy these years. They are a blessing!
