E-books and page numbers

Post by MelInKansas » Fri Sep 28, 2012 6:43 pm

I am not like many people in that I love e-books and my Kindle is really my preferred way to read a book. My DD who is 7.5 also seems to really like reading books on Kindle, and I am considering buying some of the books for DITHR on Kindle. Also some of the history books for Bigger (which we are about to start) are free downloads, so that's exciting. What do you guys think about having your child read e-books instead of paper, or reading from it for school time? The main issue I see is page numbers. Depending on your font size, there really are no page numbers you can go by, therefore making it difficult to follow the plans in the guide if you don't have the paper copy too (in the case of the Eggleston history books I do happen to have the books themselves so that makes it easier to figure out). For DITHR I can certainly take the "locations" and divide by the number of days, and I can even put markers in there for where she can start and stop. It does put a damper on some of the activities where you are supposed to look at the cover of a book, or show different books, you can show the "cover" but its not quite the same.

I am just wondering what any other drawbacks to doing this are, or if anyone else has found e-books to be a great help to homeschooling. I know a friend of mine with older kids has said that many books her son is reading for school have free Kindle versions, I love that too!

Thanks for your thoughts.

My 13dd enjoys reading on her Kindle, but prefers to hold the book. We found some of the RtoR titles free or at low cost on the Kindle. We did find it tough to match up the reading from The Famous Men of the Middle Ages so we are now ordering the actual book for my second daughter who will be using RtoR. I would think for a DITHOR and storytime books an e-book would be just fine. For the main reading about history selections I think it's best to have the actual book. HTH
