Key Idea?

Post by SherinaW » Fri Aug 31, 2012 9:57 pm

Hi and I'm new and excited about starting Monday (yes Labor day...lol) Question as I'm trying to prepare: what exactly is the Key Idea section? For instance on the 1st day under Poetry, it says to Read and appreciate variety of classic poetry. Do you mean that in general, like we should we go the library and pick something out? Is there a list provided? Can you elaborate pls? Under the other key ideas, am I suppose to say those to her?

Please help, thanks!

The key idea is like a summary of what you're teaching in that box. So, in poetry for example, the goal is to appreciate poetry. You read and discuss the poem listed and, hopefully  , they'll learn to appreciate poetry. In something like the history box it might just be a summary of what was just read and discussed (Columbus thought he found India when he landed in North America). I usually read, or at least paraphrase, it at the end of discussion before I move on.

hth.

ETA: The poems are in the back of the guide. I like to mark them with a sticky tab to make it easy to flip to them.

I generally read the key idea in history, Bible, and science to them after we finish those boxes for the day. Just to make sure that we've at least been exposed to what we are supposed to be getting out of those boxes ;)

I try to naturally incorporate the key idea in a quick summery of what we read and learned. It's kind of like a wrap-up from the lesson. I love having the key idea as it is such a great way to make sure important points are stressed.
