What r u using with older high schoolers?

Post by Yaya68 » Sat Aug 04, 2012 11:47 pm

Hello,

I have an 11th grade DS and I am not sure what to use for his curric. My 3 other boys are doing HOD and I want something equally as rich for 11th grader. We have been using Sonlight, but he took way too long to finish that his last school yr. Granted, he did have extra curric activities that took up a lot of time and required traveling throughout the yr, but I think that SL may be too much to handle.? I'm not trying to take it too easy on him, but I'd like for DS to truly enjoy his 11 th grade.

What are 'you' using for your older highschooler?

Wish I could help you, Sonya. I would have loved to have used HOD with my 9th grader this year. I put together my own curriculum for him. We are doing American Government and Economics this year so we can use HOD's Geography next year. We're also using Apologia Biology, Math U See Algebra, Literary Lessons from Lord of the Rings (and other novels too), Visual Latin, Essentials in Writing, BJUP Bible Modular Series (God & His Ways)--Answers in Genesis texts--Josh McDowells apologetics text.

We used an eclectic approach. Teaching Textbooks, Institute for Excellence in Writing, Mystery of History, and BJU history were some of our favorites. They will rate reading good books together and Chalkdust ACT/SAT prep as their favorites. However, I must say, I am MUCH more excited about high school with my 9th grade daughter this year. She is using REV2REV with extensions and beefed up. It is what I wanted with the boys but didn't find or get put together. My boys did great, and they took some dual enrollment classes at the community college, but it wasn't what HOD will be.

My dd will be a senior this year. I wish I could have done HOD with her, but it just wouldn't work out since she didn't come home until 10th. She has enjoyed her school, but honestly I don't think anything matches HOD. She joined in with my ds for the watercolor paintings in CTC just to add some fun to her schedule. Last year as an 11th grader she did Smarr British LIt and enjoyed that. I read the books also so we had good discussions. I know Carrie recommends Smarr also. I did substitute The Scarlet Pimpernel for Frankenstein. She did a Charlotte Mason style World Geography that also added fun to her day. For Bible she did "The Most Important Thing You Will Ever Study". She did Old Testament last year with this and will do New Testament this year.

I'm not there yet, but perhaps you could consider for him Missions to Modern Marvels plus Extensions this year. Perhaps you can email HOD for suggestions on what else to do to "beef up" this level for an 11th grader to ensure it is high school credit-worthy for his 11th-grade year. As it is, with the Extensions, this level of HOD is listed as appropriate for grades 9-10, or ages 15-16.

We're planning to use this (MTMM with extensions) for 11th grade next year (2013-14), and this year we are in Rev2Rev with extensions (and high school beef-ups). We have Apologia Biology for science (since we've been on their science track for many years, before we found HOD), and Saxon Algebra, Abeka High School Health, ACE English, PowerGlide High School French, etc.
