Water colours

Post by Mumkins » Wed Aug 01, 2012 10:10 pm

Just getting everything ready. Yay! I'm looking at water colours on line. The cake sets look cheap, like stuff I could buy at the dollar store and the tubes are $7 each and we need 14 colours. Are cakes just as good? Have you found a great brand or an awful brand? Any advice on choosing?

Also, how much is needed? Seems like I could need tons if we're doing 2 paintings every week. I'm looking at an 18 colour set that has 12ml tubes. How many should I buy?

I think they last a long time if you're careful not to squeeze too much out. Hopefully, someone that has used them can tell you for sure.

Thanks:)

I was also wondering about mixing the cakes. How does that work? Seems like it would be hard to pick up enough colour to mix.

I bought the 18 color tube set from Miller Pads and Paper http://www.millerpadsandpaper.com/Jacks ... s-1974.htm after Julie recommended them. These worked well.

I've read the tubes are better than cakes. No personal experience.

We used the tubes that Miller Pads and Paper sells, (which were very inexpensive by the way! ) and we found them to be very easy to use. My son just squeezed out a small amount of paint from the tubes and mixed with water! Beautiful colored paint ready to go! :D Just replace the cap and put it away, quick and easy cleanup, too! :D

I purchased the watercolor tubes from Miller Pads & plan to use them for CTC. I avoided shipping by purchasing them at our homeschool convention. My dd 20 had a watercolor painting class in college and used the tubes, but we purchased them from JoAnn Fabrics. The pictures she created are beautiful! The paint is easy to use & clean up. My ds 10 is eager to paint like big sis using Carrie's step by step directions. Tammy

I really like "tempra cakes". They are HUGE circles that work like water colors, but they have the bright hues of tempra. You can get them at Dick Blick Art Supply or Rainbow Resource. :)

I'm Canadian, so I only want to order once this year. $$ for shipping. Could someone tell me if I should buy 2 or 3 sets or if 1 would be enough?
