Bigger Hearts & dyslexia

I reacently found out my 8 yr old has mild dyslexia, which is why he can't read very well.
We are doing a training program for him at home. I had asked a question a few weeks ago about going forward
with Bigger Hearts although he can't read, and was told it would work at half speed (before we knew about this).
I hope it will still work - we will take it as slow as possible.
I was wondering if anyone has done this guide with a child that has dyslexia, and if I really can make it work.
I feel that it can, but I suppose I need confirmation. Hope this all makes sense and isn't just ramblings.

My ds was diagnosed with severe dyslexia when he was 9. We have used HOD for four years now, before and since his diagnosis. HOD works wonderfully for dyslexic kids because the books are so interesting and engaging. I have to read everything to my ds, which causes us to move more slowly through the material. We just do as much as we can each day, and then pick up where we left off the next day. I wouldn't want to use any other curriculum with my ds. There is a wonderful mix of activities to keep things interesting and moving along.

If you search under "imercon" and also under "Tracee", you'll find these ladies have some excellent words of encouragement about using HOD with their dc who are dyslexic. HTH!

Thank you so, much for the following post. It truly was a great help. I had been feeling very discouraged about my abilities to teach him. I am highly encouraged now.

Hi Mikki,

My son just turned 8 in June, and he is severely dyslexic. We will be starting Bigger in January and probably going half speed, because I don't want him to get to the next guide too early. I can't wait to start Bigger. I have the guide already, and I don't see anything in the guide that would be a huge hindrance to a child with dyslexia. You might have to swap a few things, but that is easily done. For example,you probably won't be doing the spelling in the guide, because you will be using a specific program that you have. You could do Preparing to Build orally. If he isn't ready for that, you can hold off a little while, and of course he might not be doing the Emerging Readers set, but you will still be using your own reading/spelling program. If he has any trouble with writing, you can always help him with that. If there are answers to science questions that he needs to write, you would have him answer the question orally, and then you would write it and he would copy it into his science notebook.

I'm so pleased with the rich education that my children are getting with HOD. They are hearing great stories, learning about God and the world he made, while continually improving with reading, writing and math.
