How is everyone preparing for the comming school year?
Re: How is everyone preparing for the comming school year?
To get ready for the year, I've been printing notebooking pgs that I want to use. Pulling and organizing books. Gathering all needed supplies. I'm revamping our workboxes. I'm really close to being ready. Super excited! DD even asked me if we could start school tomorrow. Not a bad problem to have.

YES, this is us, too!! It's more of a "locker" they go to, to get their books for each subject. Ours is in the kitchen, too, and we do most of our schooling in the living room (but they are open-concept right next to each other). It's not a big deal, and it gives them a chance to get up and move around between subjects. I have our dd put all the empty boxes on the floor next to the workbox shelving, and at the end of the day I go through them, checking the things that need checking, and repacking for the next day using the HOD manual. It doesn't take very long, and it's such a tangible way to get things done (for both student and teacher)!John'smom wrote:I don't necessarily use it like Sue Patrick meant, like adding things to HOD. I use it as more of an organizational tool. It's like a visual schedule except that all their items they need are in the box when they start the day. Plus it's a great visual when they see their rack (or whatever you use) getting emptied. It's a visual motivation that their work is getting done. KWIM? My dd has been using workboxes since K although I did not know about HOD then. I don't think LHFHG is too young to start.glperky wrote:So would it be to early to start workboxes with LHFHG? Sorry, I don't know a lot about workboxes for LHFHG, but I love the thought of what I know about both.

Our way is quite simple. We have 2 open shelves - the top for what we will get to, the bottom for what we are using now.
After we get a book completed we put it in our covered cabinet out of sight.
I really enjoy seeing things we have done, are doing, and will be doing separately and this is what works for our small school room.

Re: How is everyone preparing for the comming school year?
The rest of my books should be trickling in over the week so I should be set to start my odd on the 30th. This is the first time I've split my two oldest so I'm going to start my oldest a week early so I can work with her and see how much she can do independently. I know it's early but we're taking all of Oct. off so I wanted to get started. We're in the middle of a re-model so half of my kitchen is in my living room/schoolroom/playroom (you get the idea). Yesterday my kids had an afternoon with Gramma while I got some organizing done. There's not a ton I can do about the clutter right now but I did get our shelves organized and last years stuff filed, tossed, or put away for later use. I was so done with school when we ended last year I just left everything where it was! To get ready for the year I also make my own planner, get it bound and then sit down with all my books, coffee, and a shiny new pen and do a rough outline for the year. Don't forget the BTS sales! I usually try to stock up on art supplies to put together as gifts throughout the year as well as the normal things my family needs.
