R&S English

Post by jkhamell » Wed Jul 18, 2012 2:35 pm

Hi,

Another newbie question here:

I will be using Preparing with my 4th grader. It looks like she would have no problem with R & S 3 could do 4 as well. Which would you place in? She has done limited formal grammar - mostly oral up to this point. She is dyslexic and I think the font in R&S will be a challenge for her - but I want to try it.

My 11 year old (6th grade) and 13 year old (8th grade) will be using Rev. to Rev. I know the guides say all the way through R&S 6 by the end of 8th. I don't think this will be a problem. I'm just wondering if I could do them both together or would this be too much for my 6th grader? They each have done 1 season of Analytical grammar before. This looks much nicer for them. How would you suggest placing.

Thanks for your help.

For your PHFHG dd, I would do R & S English 3. It is such a nice introduction to diagramming, and with her having done mostly oral grammar up to this point and her being dyslexic, I think I'd enjoy doing 3 with her. :D R & S English 4 has much more extensive lessons and smaller fonts with much more to look at on a page. We really enjoyed doing 3 before 4, and I think you would too. :D

I would not do R & S English 6 with an 11 yo. Yikes! It's t-o-u-g-h! We just finished R & S English 5 with our 12 yo. He has done R & S English from the beginning, and it was plenty challenging. There is this comment on the HOD ordering page in regard to R & S English...
Students in grades 6 on up who have had little grammar instruction, should use English 5 since it is considered to be a foundational level of the text.

I would feel more comfortable with your 6th grader doing English 5. You could either have that child do half of 5 this year, and the other half of 5 the next year, finishing out 6 in Grade 8 full-speed. Or, you could have that child do 5 full-speed this year, and half 6 over the next 2 years. For your 13 yo, R & S English 6 should probably be just fine. :D Another option would be to have both of them do R & S English 5 this year, and then the next year have the 14 yo do full-speed R & S English 6 and the then 12 yo do half-speed R & S English 6. So, you have a few good options there, HTH! :D

We have really been impressed with R & S English. It is easy to teach, especially the way HOD recommends teaching it (doing 2/3 orally or on markerboard, and reserving just 1 section or 1/3 for dc to write in a composition book). This has worked well for our dc. I also appreciate that it is Christian. HTH! :D
