Using a calendar with LHFHG

Post by MrsKnapp » Fri Jul 13, 2012 7:56 am

Do I need a calendar to use for my planning purposes as I start our first year of HS? I haven't gotten my package yet so I don't know what the guide looks like in depth. I'd like to plan about a week or two out so that I have an idea of where we're heading before we get there, so I thought a calendar might help. Does anyone have a useful calendar/planner/scheduling tool that you'd recommend?

Thanks in advance!

For me, I find it easiest to just look through the Heart of Dakota guide itself, a week at a time. Carrie has done a wonderful job of writing truly "open-and-go" curriculum guides (AND have a special binding that lays open flat on the table for hands-free convenience), so even if I don't have a chance to look at the week's plans ahead of time, I am confident I can just open to the day's lesson, look at it briefly, and get started :) If you are wanting to keep record of school days, you can write the date in pencil on each day of lesson plans as you go. One thing that will be helpful to you is to thoroughly read your guide's Introduction and appendix pages before you get started with your school year, and refer to them as often as needed. Welcome to the boards :D

The pp had some great ideas! I too like to read carefully through the Introduction of each guide, even the guides I've taught before. :D I like to pull out a calendar to plan my year as well too, all the while knowing that unexpected things in life may come up that throw off that calendar. I did a pretty detailed post on it awhile back that I'll link you to here, in case it may help as you ponder how to plan out your year, while also allowing for some surprises along the way :D ...

I also like to make a schedule which turns into more of a routine as the year goes on. Here's one of our past "schedules"...

Here are the approximate times for each box in LHFHG...

I hope something here can help, but LHFHG is such a fun guide to teach, and the perfect start to homeschooling! I think you will love it! :D Looking forward to sharing the journey with you here as we'll be doing LHFHG with our ds Emmett too! :D

Julie,
This is wonderful, thank you so much! I'll be checking these out in depth later tonight after the kiddies are in bed! I'm excited!
Thanks,
