Language Question
Language Question
If we decide to use Beyond for 2nd grade, then do I need to add in Rod and Staff 2 for language? One lesson a week does not seem enough for language in 2nd grade in my opinion, but maybe I am wrong?

Re: Language Question
How old is your kiddo going into 2nd grade? Also how well is that kiddo reading & writing? If they were an older 7 or 8 and ready to start DITHOR, I would say maybe add it in.
My DD was 7 this entire year, we are almost done with Beyond and just got done wit
h the first genre of DITHOR and we did not add to grammer. I decided to just do it as the guide suggests. They may be a little "behind" for a year but from what I've heard, rod & staff is very thorough and it won't take long to surpass, KWIM?

Re: Language Question
We added R&S for my dd when she did Beyond, but are not adding it for my ds who is in Beyond right now. Really just depends on the child and if they are ready for daily grammar instruction. My dd was 3rd grade, though, and was definitely past the point of learning sentence vs. fragment; telling, command, or asking sentence, etc. My son is 2nd grade and those gentle introductions to grammar are just what he's needing right now.

Re: Language Question
The scope and sequence of the grammar lessons within Beyond are listed in the Introduction unit by unit. I'd look at those and see if your ds knows those concepts already. They are harder than they first appear. If he does, I'd do R & S English 2 at a lesson a day. Overall, dc should plan to complete R & S English 6 by the close of Grade 8, as R & S English 7 and 8 are high school credit worthy. HTH!

Re: Language Question
Thanks so much for your replies! My daughter is young and has a summer birthday so she will be 7 for her entire 2nd grade year. I will take a look at the scope and sequence and see if we covered those things last year when we used Abeka for language. I do know that I don't want to continue with Abeka though as that was not the right fit for my daughter. Thanks for the advice!

Re: Language Question
I thought the same thing about the grammar starting slowly, but I decided to trust the guide. It picks up in pace quickly in the next guide. If you wanted you could easily do more grammar lessons per week. Just go at your own pace through the book.
