When to end the "grade"?
When to end the "grade"?
DS8 will finish Beyond tomorrow - yay!! Then we're taking a few weeks off before starting Bigger. I will officially consider him 3rd grade at that point.
DD6 however is only on unit 29 of LHFHG. We had started the program at half-speed and then went full speed so that's why she's not on the same schedule as DS. She, too, will be on break and then we will resume where we left off in LH. But I don't know whether to still consider her in Kindergarten or whether to move her to 1st grade status after the break like DS is moving to 3rd grade status.
Do you determine your child's grade at the end of the program or according to the time of year even if you're in the middle of a program?
Thanks!

Re: When to end the "grade"?
I don't pay any attention to the grade. But, if someone asks (I usually have to think about it) but I just tell them the grade the child would be in according to the government school, because that's what they are really wondering about and what they know.
It would be hard to put a grade on the guides anyway since they are for an age range. So, I guess whatever grade you want to call them!
Blessings.

I just advance mine to the next grade in August (whatever grade they would be attending if we went to PS).

Re: When to end the "grade"?
Once we've put in our 180 school days for the current year, I call them the next grade up. So in your situation, I would say that your younger child has now advanced to the next grade.

Re: When to end the "grade"?
My child was 8 when we officially started his schooling. He has had some dev. delays. prior. When I had to notify the school , they asked what gr. he was. and I felt it was legit to say 1st, as he wasn't reading or writing. We worked on those skills until Jan. and then began HOD Beyond. therefore we are only halfway through the guide. and are now on summer break YEAH!!!! When we begin in late aug. I will continue with the Beyond guide but call him 2nd gr. I wouldn't think it is what guide your in that determines the grade...

Re: When to end the "grade"?
All 3 of my school-aged kids are in the middle of guides, but I bump them up to the next grade when their peers finish their school year. We school year-round, so on paper they go up to the next grade in July (when my new planner/attendence record/grade sheets begin .)

Re: When to end the "grade"?
We break for summer here, and I consider them to be done with their current "grade" in May when we break. Garret is in the middle of LHFHG this summer, and I consider him to be done with K and ready for 1st...and we'll pick up where we left off. Allison finished Beyond this past year, and is a ways into Bigger, and I consider her to have finished 2nd grade and be ready for 3rd. Grant did RTR for 6th grade. My "plan" is to have my kids ready to begin and complete a guide per year when we hit Preparing because it's easier for me. So, we roll with some 4 day weeks and stop wherever we are with those 1st 3 guides, and so far it looks like it will work.

Re: When to end the "grade"?
Our school district wants 180 days, so as the pp's stated, you advance your child to the next grade when you have fulfilled the requirements for a year of school. It doesn't matter how much of the guide is finished. My dd will begin Bigger in August to start grade 3, but I know it will run into grade 4. No worries.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. III John 4

Re: When to end the "grade"?
Thank you everyone! We also school year-round and will start our "new year" after a two week break. I was thinking that I would consider her 1st when we start up again as most of you suggested.

Re: When to end the "grade"?
We school year round, so we can't just bump them up when we've done 180 days The attendance chart we use goes from July 1 to June 30, so we basically start saying they are the next grade up on July 1.
So after July 1, to random people, my kids will say they are in 4th, 2nd, K, and preschool.
To other homeschoolers they'll say something along the lines of "I'm in 4th grade about to start 5th grade work" because other homeschoolers understand
