New to HOD / HOD Preparing?

Post by gratitude » Fri Jun 15, 2012 2:24 pm

Hi! I am seriously considering HOD Preparing for my ds8 for 3rd grade next fall; he will be 9 this summer. We just did American History this year and when I looked at the placement chart it looks like it would be a great fit academically.

I would love to hear what users of HOD love about HOD and Preparing. How is the Bible integrated into history in Preparing and CTC? What do you like? What do you like academically? What do you like about HOD spiritually? Any struggles with it?

Thank you! :D

Preparing is the BOMB!! It is hard to describe what I like about it. There is NOTHING I don't like about it. I LOVE that the history is so biblically linked and follows a young Earth philosophy.

I love that the Independent history (which I recommend you purchase) helps to solidify what they are studying in history with independent and fun activities.

I love that they are memorizing Psalms and learning to have a personal quiet time with guided prayers.

It is just the right mix of independent work and teacher lead work.

I hope that helps!!

We are just into Unit 7 in Preparing, and love it!!! I am learning so much (and so is dd) :D . I love this Biblical approach to world history-I never studied how and where and when these ancient things fit with Scripture, and I'm fining I can hardly wait for tomorrow's lesson  . My dd is really enjoying the projects and I love the unique way that HOD uses really fun things for her to solidify the History studies. I appreciate HOD's balance to academics. We are adding in things that I know I would not get to if I were on my own-poetry, research, timelines, and the history projects I referred to earlier to name a few. I also appreciate Carrie's guidance on delving deeply into our readings. I'm afraid I'd be one to just read and not take the time to really teach my children to dig into the deeper meaning and contemplate some of these things, never having been really taught this way myself  . Anyway, HOD does all of this in a very easy, straightforward manner. We're not swamped with such a variety of things to do-each of these things is scheduled in just a few minutes each day or each week, and it's not overwhelming.

Struggles? Well, right now I know it's taking us longer than it should to complete each day. This is not HOD's fault, however, but mine  . I'm going to be really working with dd on our time management, and getting these things down to the goal times for each box.

Welcome to the HOD Board, gratitude! :D We've enjoyed PHFHG with 2 of our dc over the years, and I am looking forward to using it with my third eventually when he is older. :D PHFHG is truly a delight to teach. The books are amazing - one of our all time favorites is "Grandpa's Box". Imagine one of the best storytellers you've ever heard being a grandpa figure that shares by heart Biblical history from Genesis to Revelation... and then, imagine that Biblical history being integrated with world history seamlessly by being paired chronologically with yet another great storyteller sharing with you world history. The pairing of "Grandpa's Box" and "Child's History of the World" was incredible! We loved it. These books are easy to narrate from, are engaging, and are a great way to take a tour of history. :D These books, paired with the history focused Storytime books read aloud and with the Deluxe History books dc read independently weaves together a thorough, exciting narrative of history!

We enjoyed the variety of follow-up skills PHFHG included as well. Oral narrations, written narrations, Biblical applications with Scriptures, discussion questions (the kind that really make you think  ), timeline entries, vocabulary work, geography, "Draw and Write Through History" sketches - never a dull moment! Each of my dc had different favorites, but they definitely both loved the Research paired with the History Projects! Virtually every week felt like a picture worthy moment. In fact, you can see all of the pictures I took through the year on the board's Weekly Check-In if you are interested. :D

Another hands-on favorite of both of our sons was the science exploration box. Great living books paired with fun experiments using the scientific method - it was a good balance. The teacher in me loved the comprehension questions and oral narrations in science too - easy to see if they "got it". PHFHG's creative writing lessons were a breakthrough in creative writing for both of our sons. Their poetry styles turned out to be very different from one another, but both felt inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson, and both felt like they could be successful at it thanks to PHFHG's plans. :D

The Bible Study box turned out to be such a perfect balance - I loved my role and they loved theirs. I really enjoyed the depth of discussions we had in the Bible study box several times a week, and how it helped us make our own connections. Our dc see the Psalms as a great place to go for various moods or feelings they may be having in life. When we write encouragement cards to people in our home, I see my dc turn to Psalms often to find a verse to include in their cards - I know that is thanks to PHFHG. :D Memorizing passages and singing along with "Lead Me to the Rock" was so special... so special that my ds picked to use the CD again this summer for fashioning his own Bible quiet time during our time off. I liked that PHFHG encouraged my dc to have their own Bible Quiet Time. What a great idea to foster this important habit early on! :D

Those are just some of the things that come to mind when you ask about PHFHG. I think you would find it to be a great way to spend a year homeschooling. HTH! :D

Thank you so much ladies! I Love hearing about your experiences and the Bible and skills integrated into the program. This is still at the top of my list as I go over possible choices with DH. :D

I really think a Bible quiet time could highly benefit my oldest this year, who is turning 9 this summer. He is ready for it, and does it occasionally on his own, but we need structure to help me keep it consistent. It sounds like a program that would really make him grow in a lot of areas that he is ready to grow in.

Thank you so much for the insights.
