U.S edition for Singapore K?

Post by amysue277 » Sun Jun 10, 2012 9:08 pm

I am thoroughly confused. I was at convention this past weekend all ready to buy Singapore K, and there were 2 versions to choose from: Singapore Earlybird Kindergarten and Singapore Essential Math for K. I am aware that the original one that Carrie wrote the activities for is going out of print, and I cannot buy it (since I already bought the manual used). So I want to buy the new version, the one she will be writing activites for. Here were the options:

Earlybird K was full color, A and B (separately) and cost $24 each. They had short lessons on the bottom of the page which were more suited to a classroom. Picture of kids on a blanket flying kites on cover.

Essential Math for K was B & W, and costs $10. Both A and B.

So which is the one that Carrie is rewriting the math activities for in LHFHG? I do NOT want to get the wrong one. Does anyone know?

thanks1

Carrie isn't going to be rewriting Kindy math plans anytime soon. They have a good relationship with the publisher of Earlybird math and they will continue printing for HOD. So, you can buy from HOD only, as they are the only ones that will carry this version of Earlybird. (Earlybird comes in 1a,b, 2a, 2b...HOD uses 2a and 2b in LHFHG)

Tamara,
When I emailed, Mike responded that she will be rewriting the math portion of LHFHG in August, due out in November.

Also, you can only purchase the current math books if you buy the manual new directly from HOD. Since I bought mine used, I need to either miraculously find an unused copy of the current book, or find out which edition she is rewriting the math for. Hence, my original post.

I guess it would be up to you to come up with your own math program - I don't think it has been announced what they will use - it may not even be decided since they are still working on the next guide and won't really be doing anything until it is completed - anyway that is my thoughts on this however I am no expert...
You can easily use whatever math program you want - if you plan to stay with Singapore I would recommend picking one of theirs just so that the style is familiar...

Did you ask in your email what they would be using? I have been stuck on this too and not sure what to do.

I asked Carrie at convention, because a friend of mine wanted to know what to do with her Kindergartener. Right now Carrie is finishing MTMM. Once she is done, bless her heart, she will find out what steps to take regarding LHFHG math.
The only way to get the books at this point, is if you directly ordered your LHFHG guide, in your own name, from HOD and they have record of this. They have incredible customer service and I am very thankful how they accommodate their customers and they had to make a decision to whom they would sell the few math books that are left. :D :D
It is a trying situation, but I know the Lord will help Carrie and Mike come up with the best solution for the future. I feel for Mom's who need these books, but like one of the Mom's mentioned, get a Singapore book and you will at least teach your child the same basic foundation, so they can jump into Primary Mathematics in 1A and 1B.
Success and I pray the Lord will guide you in what book to use for Kindergarten. :D :D

I cannot tell you for certain, but I did just purchase the LHFHG guide with the Earlybird Kindergarten books, and if it were me, I would purchase the following ones from the Singapore website (you can link directly to Singapore from Heart of Dakota going through LHFHG packages). These books are $18.80 on Singapore's website.

Earlybird Kindergarten Math STD ED Activity Bk A

Earlybird Kindergarten Math STD ED Activity Bk B

The books I ordered directly from Heart of Dakota are thin books (which makes me think they are activity books instead of textbooks) with activities for the teacher at the bottom stating, "Before Using This Page." And it implies this would be used in a group setting though Carrie notes how to change up the activities in the guide. You can see samples of a few lessons if you click on these. Though the lessons don't line up exactly with mine, you can compare the sample lessons to the LHFHG Table of Contents to find which lesson in LHFHG would coincide with the sample lesson to see if it will work for you.

I have used Both the Earlybird 2A/2B books scheduled in LHFHG & the Essentials A/B books. If I had one more going through the K level, I would buy Essentials instead of EB. The activities are similar to EB without the busyness and the pages are easy to mesh with the LHFHG activities. Although, my dc prefer B&W uncluttered workbooks so maybe it's just us lol. I thought Essentials laid a good foundation for 1A even though we are a very non-mathy family  .

Okay, Mike responded to my email as follows:

Carrie has not yet decided which math text she will use for the new LHFHG math activities. It seems she will be looking at writing them in the Fall.

I would get the SM Essentials books and just do the pages that line up with the daily hands on activity. I really hope Carrie chooses to use the Essentials K books in the future. I feel like they are more like the Sm US edition than the new earlybird K books are. Also they are a much better price. I bought both Essentials A and B books for my dd to use along with LHFHG for K. We also had the Earlybird 2b book that Carrie has scheduled but my dd wanted more math worksheets.

Hmm.

So what happens if I order a LHFHG guide now- with the earlybird math books, and then in a few years I am ready to use the guide again with my daughter (who is now 2). ?? The same text won't be available then? I guess there would be an appendix solution... but that would kinda cut out the cute factor of hod's open and go, all on one page layout..

Oh well. I have to order soon for my son. I am sure singapore has good reason to write a new book, must be an improvement... just they're messin' with THE guide!

I'm wondering about this too. My oldest is going through LHFHG now with the Earlybird books, but I purchased my guide used, so I can't order another set for my son who is nearly ready for LHFHG. This means, I'll have to have an entire guide's worth of new math activities OR just use another program entirely. :/

OK, don't laugh, but as soon as I knew I was pregnant with my now 2yo, I ordered a set of Earlybird books for her so I wouldn't have to deal with it....
