What skills in LHFHG are necessary to learn to go to Beyond?

Post by intotheirhearts » Fri Jun 08, 2012 7:15 pm

Since HOD builds on itself year after year, what are some of the main skills taught in LHFHG that are needed for Beyond? We did not do HOD this past year but will be doing Beyond with my son in the fall, who will be almost 6.5 years old. I do think he places into Beyond, but am nervous about if there are any skills he may be weak in from not having gone through LHFHG last year.

At 6.5, I would REALLY consider LHFHG with emerging readers. Just my opinion. But it goes clear though bible history, and I feel that is worth the whole year!! And with him only being 6, he has PLENTY of time for the other guides.

We have had a lot of Bible. What we did this past year has gone through Bible history. And he goes to bed every night listening Bible stories on CD. I'm very excited to go on to some American history! We will still always be learning Bible history of course. He places very well in Beyond. Ready for emerging readers, can copy sentences, he WANTS to do spelling (he likes spelling!), ready for a gentle intro to grammar - he asks grammar questions on his own these days. He does great with listening when he is read to and has AMAZING narration skills...he remembers more of what I read aloud to him than what I remember! So he definitely places into Beyond. I just want to make sure he hasn't missed anything crucial that he would have gotten from Little Hearts that maybe wasn't in our curriculum from this past year.

Wow, it sounds like he's ready for Beyond!! My DD just turned 7 when we started in Beyond, we had not done the previous guides. In fact, she was in public kindy, so had no narration and has done fine in Beyond. He is on the young side, but if he's ready for then do it!! You could start out half speed for a semester or less, or do the guide only 4 days a week (we are) just to stretch it out some. Just because he's ready for Beyond at 6.5 doesn't mean he will be ready for Bigger at 7.5 etc. Altho you could just go whatever pace you're comfortable with now and slow down if you need to later!! :) just to give you more to think about, LOL!!

At the most we will be doing it 4 days per week. We have co-op on Mondays so we will never do HOD on those days. And the way life is, I am sure there will be days we only do it 3 times per week. In fact, the kids go to Grandma's on Thursday afternoons and so those days usually end up not being a school day anyhow. But I know eventually we will have to make sure we get school in on Thursdays too. We can't do a 3 day school week forever!

Sounds perfect then!! I can't think of anything my DD should have known beforehand. We just learned as we went!!

I think it helps if they can sit and listen to longer, chapter style read alouds (you can use thinking putty, etc for the wiggles). A basic understanding of what narration is will help too. That can be done by re-telling a picture book, passage in a chapter book/harder picture book, or even an event in life. I don't think they have to be good at it, Beyond will help improve the skill, but it'll help if they know what it means the first time you get to that box.

We just finished Beyond for 2nd grade and it was wonderful. Enjoy!

He knows about narration as we had that in out curriculum this past year. He is wonderful at it. Better at remembering what I read aloud than I am at remembering! Sometimes I have to go back to see if something he told me was correct! Those are for somewhat short sections. But yes, he is able to sit for chapter books. He LOVES being read too. We put an audio chapter book on the computer last week and the first day he sat for 2 hours still and content on the couch listening away, with only 1 break after the first hour to get up for a minute. Another day, he finished off the book listening to the last hour in one sitting. I was AMAZED that he sat SO still and content for so long listening! And although he didn't remember a TON of stuff because it was such huge chunks, when we then watched the movie I would ask questions before they appeared on the movie and he would answer correctly. So he at least remembered main points from the HUGE chunks (way more than we would ever be reading at one time in Beyond).

I think he places solidly in Beyond, and he sounds prepared! :D HOD wisely recognizes that age is only one part of placement, and suggests an age range of ages 6-8 yo for Beyond Little Hearts. The placement chart helps make clear which guide dc place in best, and your ds clearly places best in Beyond! Two of my 3 dc also did Beyond when they were 6 yo, and it was a perfect fit. It is a wonderful guide - I wouldn't worry about preparing for it - ds is ready - just start it and enjoy! :D
