We began our delayed child age 8.5 with Beyond in late Jan. We began with singapore 1 a.. and have just finished with it(.Prior to this math we had only been working with dominoes, discussing numbers and how many place settings at the dinner table etc. playing bean bag catch and taking turns calling out numbers 1-20.)
. I do have a lot of questions and would like some feedback. I had to direct my son every step of the way and I know modelling the concepts is kosher , which we did. I posted earlier about the very abstract lesson 49 and it seems others did what I did . I happened to watch a you tube video of some of the info about the singapore claim to fame and during the course of it they discussed the number bonds. I realised my child had never been exposed to number bonds. and saw that it was introduced in the early bird series. We encountered him seeing numbers going from higher to lower and you were to follow the pattern and he didn't recognise that but when I pointed it out to him that this number is 9 and the next is 8 ,what would the next be , he was ok. now I can see why that might of been more difficult for my son in 1 a.
So now my concern is if we should back pedal to the early bird series or continue on in 1 b. We have had a difficult math journey with another child in the past, and I would like to avoid that possibility.. especially if the problem is I really skipped a learning concept..
I will appreciate your insights.
thank you

I think if he seemed to grasp things in 1A fairly well after you have explained them and wasn't struggling terribly, I would move onto 1B. We never did the Earlybird series. We had done some Miquon and living math like what you had done previous and started with 1A and moved on from there. I haven't found that we missed out on anything crucial by starting from there and we're now in 5B. I really don't think the Earlybird series is really a prerequisite for 1A. HTH!

I'm in total agreement with this advice! How did 1A go, considering not all of it is mastery, but rather more an introduction for much of it? I'd be more inclined to do the hands-on lessons for 1A leisurely through the summer break (as they are no prep and great fun anyway), and using matching workbook page assigned (which was already completed), I'd copy a few to a handful of problems from workbook on markerboard for ds to do. What do you think? We have completed Singapore Math through Level 6A now and couldn't be more pleased with the results.
