Is FLL necessary or just an added.

Post by AmyB » Wed May 14, 2008 7:53 pm

I just received my "Beyond" book and after looking at it, it looks like Carrie covers a lot of the basic grammar stuff, so, is FLL just added work that really isn't needed or does it really enhance the grammar that Beyond starts with. I am grammar challenged, so anything that I can do to make sure that my kids are not would be good, but I don't want to bog them down with too much grammar. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Amy,

We are doing "Beyond" also. I definitely think the grammar within the program is enough on it's own. This year the focus is on spelling and you do one grammar lesson per week. Next year, it picks up considerably but as children get older they are able to handle more. I like the "gentleness" of Beyond's lang arts :D

HTH,
Mary, your fellow Beyond'er!

We are doing Beyond now but have no idea what FLL is. Am I missing something?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...but I believe that FLL is on the HOD website to be used with DITHOR if you're not using an HOD program and want to round out language arts for your child. If you're using an HOD program, like Beyond, the LA in it is complete.

I'm grammar challenged as well. I believe the CM view point is grammar can be introduced at this age but if they are not interested don't bother because they will not retain what they are learning.

Some states require grammar others do not.

My kid loves grammar so we do it but if she showed no interest we would be ignoring it as our state has no grammar requirement.

Ditto to what Kathleen and MamaMary said. Beyond... has its own grammar. First Language Lessons is on the site to pair up with DITHR only if you are just using DITHR and not another complete HOD guide along with it.

Why do they suggest FLL for use with DITHOR instead of R&S English, which is scheduled in the HOD programs?

HOD is discontinuing this product because they recommend English 2 & 3.
