Concern with Lesson 49 Singapore 1 A

Post by MeadowWay » Sun May 20, 2012 9:56 pm

I am curious to hear if others had concerns or maybe suggestions to approach this lesson. We found it far too abstract for our child.
the lesson gives an array of 36 numbers , that the child is to figure out how to use them to make either an addition or subtraction number sentence. They are then to insert the + or - and = signs within the identified number sentence. this was way over my son's head. Therefore I had to suggest 3 numbers and then work from there, asking him if such and such would make it a add or minus problem. So me coaching, etc was the only way to do this, or allow him to just randomly guess. I am curious to know how others did this and /or if others thought it was too abstract.
TIA
Blessings

It's been a while since my dd did that page, but I know she had difficulty with that. If I remember correctly, I had to talk her through it, one at a time. I think I did it kind of like you did. I don't really think they would be expected to pick them out on their own at that point. Sorry I'm not much help.

Is that the one that looks like a word search? If so, I just told my kids to treat it like a word search and try to find where two numbers would add together to make the last number. Then we did a subtraction one. But my girls LOVE word searches, so that was a very familiar thing to do for them.

I think modeling like you did is very valuable. They aren't expected to have mastered such things, and what better way to teach how the thinking process goes with such a problem than to model it! :)

Well it seems by the response, we did the right think by modelling it. But I came away feeling like I told my child not only how to do it but what to do. What then makes Singapore a cut above other math? Sorry, I was doing real good with it until this lesson. Hoping this too shall pass.

bc other programs wouldn't even have them learning s method like tthat. its exposure. not mastery at this point. there will come a time when you'll see thr fruit of this method. you habe to teach it uams.go through it and model the hard things and.even.do it with them. you can.expect only rote memory without this level of understanding. that's what makes Singapore.methods so much better. it goes so far beyond memory.
we don't use Singapore but a program that uses the exact same methods. and today my 2nd grader was doing.4-step word problems using 2-3 operations per problem. I did most of them with him at first and demonstrated the thinking.through it process. modeling works. then we did some.where he'd fill in.for some.parts. then he took over and taught me. then.he went solo. kinda like math narration. :) He knee exactly how to think through ajd.he made.it his own with confidence.

Yep, just agreeing with what everyone else said. I can't remember exactly, but I probably modeled it for him and helped him through it.
