Where to after LHTH?

Hello! I am just wondering if you all have any suggestions for my 3 year old - he will be 4 in July. We have been through LHTH twice. We began some workbooks just to fill in.

This is where he is at: He knows all his letters and letter sounds. He spells (written and verbally) and reads three letter, short vowel words (BOB books). He sits through chapter books and can answer questions about them (mostly). I am not sure if I should attempt LHFHG with him or not?? I guess what I am struggling with is whether it will be too much even if he seems to have the skills and attention span. He does not fit into the age range & will only be a young 4. I am not sure he is ready for more math. I don't want to push him or cause him to hate learning...right now he LOVES school. Another concern is whether or not he will then be ready for the next guide (age, maturity, etc.).

Honestly, although we have loved LHTH, I don't think either of us can go through it again.

Hopefully others more experienced will chime in, but I don't think it's unreasonable to consider trying LHFHG at half pace. If you have been through LHTH twice, then half pace should not be too overwhelming for your ds. It will keep your school time similar to LHTH and will allow your ds to mature age wise into the guides.

We started LHFHG with dd (combined with ds 6) when she was 4 years 3 months. We do a full day of HOD, but only 4 days a week and she has done wonderfully well. She placed in LHFHG in every area except age. So, if your ds places there as well, I think you will be fine. Just make sure he is ready for workbook type work and take it slow.

You could give a trial run at 1/2 speed and see what you think. You would want to take 2 years in LHFHG so you did not hit Beyond until age 6. You could do math, phonics, and handwriting as he is ready. We are currently taking two years for LHFHG with our youngest, starting at age 5. I don't plan to do the phonics or Singapore math until the 2nd year. We are using some of the Kumon books for this year to build skills. Our son was very ready for the History, Bible, and storytime, but not for the fine motor skills or reading activities. This plan seems to be working well for us so far.

What I would do in your situation would be to do LHFHG half speed. I'd wait and do math until you get to the second half and then do it full speed, just flip back to the front of the guide and keep a tab wherever you are. I'd do the fine motor skills based on how well he does with them. If he does fine with them I'd do them full speed and get through both K and 1st options, but if he doesn't do well either do them half speed or wait until the second half of the guide and do them full speed.

It is spring! At least in Alaska we are rejoicing we see green right now. So, my thoughts drift to taking your DS outside.

That is a good question.

I was planning on starting little hands with my 2yr old daughter... maybe instead I will just get the age appropriate bible and devotional and read those this year. When she turns 3 or 4 start the actual manual. ??

Maybe hod could use a pre-pre school guide. Lol

But the new upper grade guides are priority I am sure.

Ladies, thank you! I am going to pray more & maybe order LHFHG. I checked out a friend's guide to get a feel for it. Half paced seems pretty doable.

Thanks Heidi in AK! We are doing a lot of outside play. We love the sunshine, too!! Hadn't thought about taking day 5 off, too. We did that this year with LHTH...

Raindrops, I think it is this specific kiddo & watching the older "do school." My first born is 12. He HATED everything related to learning. It was not until he turned 8 that he began to get the swing of things. And that is something to THANK GOD for...HOORAY!! About starting with your 2 year old: that is what we did. My ds LOVED it! If he did not, I would have set it aside until he was older. We just finished repeating it - I don't regret it...just felt at a loss as to where to go from here!!
