which guide and/or resources are your favorites?
I'm going to be going through bigger with my younger two and RtR with my older two. It will be our first year with HOD. I'm just curious which guides and books, are favorites because they all look awesome!

We've only used LHFHG and now we are finishing Beyond. I can't really say I liked one over the other. Each one is special in it's own way. We will be enjoying our present guide and by the time we near it's end, we look forward to the next one. Beyond has been great, but now since we are near the end, I look forward to starting Bigger. I do look ahead at what is coming in future guides, so I do get excited about that. But, it doesn't overshadow the one we are doing. I like to savor all that our present guide offers, and then move on to savor the next.
I anticipate that each guide will offer the same enjoyment.
The sad part for me is that I do not have any more children coming on behind to use them again.

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. III John 4

Re: which guide and/or resources are your favorites?
As far as the kids go, we have learned from and enjoyed all the programs we've used. We are finishing up Bigger Hearts and looking forward to world history in Preparing Hearts. My daughter is super excited to read the new books. HOD is a rich full program at all levels and I don't think there are any that are better than any other.
But MY favorite is LHFHG because of how much I learned from it about the history of the church. I have loved all the programs but the timing of LHFHG in my life was important because my husband wanted to change churches. He didn't think the church we were going to was scripturally sound. The history I learned that year through LHFHG helped me to see what he was talking about and helped me to be more gracious in following his lead. I learned so much that I had never heard growing up. I didn't know about the Reformation for instance. It was a pivotal year that God used to open my ears to ideas that were different from those I learned as a child.

Re: which guide and/or resources are your favorites?
We have used and enjoyed all of the HOD guides, but we have enjoyed different aspects of each guide each year. One of the many things we love about HOD is there is always an element of newness to each guide, as well as an element of familiarity from year to year.
In BHFHG, we loved the Eggleston books - they are so narrative and just great stories to read and enjoy together. I also personally loved the notebooking assignments, as they were just neat to see the kids do and I could tell they'd learned so much. Our kids loved the science experiments especially. I enjoyed the Godly character traits we got to discuss in the Bible Study box each day - great talks there. Learning the hymns together and then hearing our dc sing them so well in church was near and dear to my heart too!
In RTR, I loved doing the "Boyhood and Beyond" study with Wyatt. We had the best discussions, and it helped me talk about so many things I didn't know how to talk about but knew I needed to with him.
Wyatt loved studying astronomy, and he really enjoyed the newfound independence of having the skills and maturity to run with the history projects more independently. He also could not wait to do the Shakespeare study each week. I enjoyed the art appreciation lessons, as this was an area I had no education in prior to HOD. It was so neat to do this and learn together! The Storytime books were amazing reads, and Emily Dickinson is still a favorite poet of Wyatt's thanks to RTR.
If I had to pick an all-time favorite guide, I don't know if I could, but right now I'd pick PHFHG (probably because I am doing it now
). I just love, love, love "Grandpa's Box", as well as how proud I am of the boys as they take on more independence successfully bit by bit in that guide. It is a growing year in so many ways. Have fun with Bigger and RTR - and be sure to share YOUR favorites when you are done too!
In Christ,
Julie

Re: which guide and/or resources are your favorites?
Oh My! What a good question. I could not pick a favorite guide having gone through Bigger and just begun Preparing. I LOVED the chronological Bible History emphasis of LHFHG. And I was SO sad to finish Bigger. The history in that one was AMAZING!
But books!! Carrie has chosen some REAL gems! A Cricket in Time Square, Baby Island, Misty Of Chincoteague, A Mouse Called Wolf, Mr. Popper's Penguins to name a VERY few! Even the books in the emerging readers pack were so engaging!
I also love and recommend a book called "Red Sails To Capri". It is a MUST READ adventure story!!

Re: which guide and/or resources are your favorites?
That's a tough one.
We did Bigger and RTR this year. Before this year, I would have said that Preparing was our all-time favorite guide, but now....I think it's a tie between Preparing and RTR, although Bigger sure was a lot of fun.....
As far as favorite books...wow, I don't think I have that much room to type.
Let's see, some of our favorites would be Ben and Me, Rabbit Hill, Tirzah, Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin, In Grandma's Attic, Rascal, Triumph for Flavius, A Child's Geography Vol 2, Boy of the Pyramids, Mr. Revere and I, all of the Jeanne Bendick books, and this year my oldest son has loved Monks and Mystics, Ink on His Fingers, The King's Fifth, The Boy Knight, and Black Horses for the King.
I've spent today looking at next year's stuff. I'm way excited to be doing Rev to Rev for the first time and to be doing Preparing again!
