LHFHG Order

Post by glperky » Tue Apr 24, 2012 8:22 pm

Those of you using LHFHG, what order do you find that doing the 9 blocks works best? Do you take breaks between them on most days or just continue right along? This will be my first time using HOD and I want an idea on how to start off right. I know it's different for everyone but still would like an idea. Thanks!

How old is your DC doing LHFHG? We go in order, but I might switch things up if I feel like my 2yo, who often "joins in," is not going to do so very well that day. But I usually go in order.

Also, I often break up LH as a section to be done all together, and then pieces of the RH side at various times during the day. Storytime will often get done at night, while emerging readers get done during the day, along with fine motor skills and math.

Thanks Heidi,

One will be 5 in Nov. the other will be 7 in Dec. (Wow, how time flies!) I am really only doing the history side, the storytime, and the workbooks so not the Phonics and Math. I am using something else for those.

Thanks again.

I usually let my kids tell me the order they want to do their work in. Sometimes I have to tell them to choose something different for one reason or another, but they like this. They still complete everything, but they get a choice. My middle girl (4) does 5 things a day although we're not using any particular guide since she has completed LHTH and I wanted to save LHFHG for K-5. I just have an assorted collection of things, but she does them all 5 together (no history is included this year). My oldest (6 in Beyond) does a little more than half the boxes, then I give her a break for 30-45 min, then we come back to it.

I used to try to do history right away, but it was hard since I had my younger two being quite needy early in the morning. I though it worked better to tie it all together if I did it first. Then one day while we were reading history very last my daughter perked up at something I read and said, "Hey that was just like what we did earlier!" So I've come to realize it doesn't really matter so much to me what order they are done it. It also breaks the monotony.

Funny thing...my oldest almost always chooses the same order every day and my middle girl will almost always choose a different order. It has given me insight into their personalities for sure!

I don't really have a specific order, but we do pretty much everything at one sitting. Some things we do later, like today we have to make edible playdough and make a golden calf. I'm waiting till everyone is done with school to make it so they can all have some.

I'm doing half-speed LHFHG, but here's a copy of the order I'm using with Emmett...

I like to do Bible Study and Phonics first as I think they are important and require concentration. From there on, there is flexibility - I try to alternate fine motor type things with hands-on activities to break up the writing. When I did LHFHG full-speed with our other boys, I tried to keep the left side intact too, as it has such great connections to the history theme. HTH! :D
