dictation question: what does this mean?

Post by MeadowWay » Tue Apr 24, 2012 6:22 am

We are fairly new with HOD. Today in our guide it said to "have students comple the first studied dictation exercise" I am confused , as to what that means.
can someone shed some light on this.
thanks much

There are dictation passages in the Appendix. The instructions for how to do dictation are also there. Basically the child studies the dictation passage for a few minutes until they feel ready to do it. Then you take it away and dictate one part at a time and they write it down. You go over it together to check for mistakes. If there are mistakes, they do the same passage tomorrow. If there are none, they do the next passage tomorrow.

Ok maybe I need to be clearer about my question:

Here is where my confusion lies. One day it will say have student complete one dictation exercise But another time it says have student complete the first studied dictation exercise. Can you tell me what the difference is between the 2 assignments.
Right along I have been following the dictation process, but this complete the first studied dictation exercise has me stumped...
thanks

you're just going.to.do the first dictation.assignment, passage 1, smd.then from.then.on.out you'll do one passage each time.it.says. it can't give numbers bc your child.may get the first five.correct the first.five days then.may miss passage 6 on.day 6....but another child may miss the 2nd.passage on.day 2 and.repeat it on.day 3, then do passage 3 on.day 4.

So you'll just.for a passage a day...either a new one or the one.from.the previous day if he missed.it.

I think they are both different ways of saying the same thing. So just carry on doing dictation as you have been doing.

This is right! Dictation is done in the way the Appendix instructs it to be done every time, even if the wording is slightly different in the daily plans. Sometimes space makes a difference in how things are worded. Dictation is the same day to day, year to year, guide to guide, so once you are on a roll with it, it just moves forward like clockwork. I LOVE dictation - it is such a breath of fresh air to teach spelling in this manner for me. The kids also prefer it - HTH! :D
